editWhere did the following come from?
To ensure proper use of a cleaver and to avoid injury grasp the handle with one hand. With your other hand, hold the food with your fingertips curled under and your knuckles against the blade, as shown. Then cut carefully, holding the blade against your knuckles as a guide. For safety, lift the cleaver just slightly as you cut. With practice, cutting with a cleaver becomes a very smooth and efficient cutting technique. If you wash your cleaver you can ensure it's maximum shelf life by washing it in warm soapy water and applying a thin coat of vagetable oil on each side.
It reads like the instructions on a package. It says "as shown" shown where? The only image in the article didn't show how to use a cleaver. I think it may be a copyvio, so I've removed it. ~ ONUnicorn (Talk / Contribs) 16:11, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
"Used as a Weapon"
editI removed the sentence "It can also be used as a weapon." The whole rest of the article is about the cleaver as food preparation utensil (though granted the sentence was in the intro), so (1) that is good enough reason to keep the sentence out at this point; and (2) I think weaponry is ommitted for good reason anyway: (a) that is not the manufacturer's intended purpose, and (b) it doesn't really need to be explained that a kitchen knife could also be used as a weapon.
If the cleaver has some sort of special prominence somewhere as martial arts weapon, traditional or modern, or even in film, I think that properly presented information about that use would be a good addition to the article.
What's with the hole?
editDoes anyone know what the purpose of the hole in the upper front corner of a traditional European cleaver is? If so, please add to the article! Thanks. 85.178.63.95 (talk) 16:40, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
In a mobile kitchen like in the old times in the west in a Conestoga wagon or something you can store the cleacer on a nail. But it also comes handy nowadays because it is easier to store it at a board, without the problem of damage to the blade when stored in a box with other knifes. 89.55.137.236 (talk) 19:46, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Pop-culture
editShould there be a pop-culture section, given the popularity of cleavers (as opposed to, say, chef's knives) for use by characters in horror fiction and movies/TV/etc? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 3-sphere (talk • contribs) 22:24, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- Generally no, because they usually fail to come with WP:Reliable sources, and thus make a WP:V nightmare. I yield no support for such a section, on this page or any Wikipedia page. But that's just me. -- 李博杰 | —Talk contribs email 12:44, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
