Article move

edit

The article that was here was moved to College athletics in the United States because it had a global tag since 2009. As the article had not been fixed in a long time and the structure was not conducive to providing a global perspective, it was the easiest solution to fixing the problem. A stub article was created here. Yes, it is pretty awful but a new structure and removal of the USA centric perspective should allow for greater improvement. --LauraHale (talk) 23:33, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The USA-centric perspective you reference is a U.K.-generated parallax. While the entire world recognizes and uses "athletic" in the same way, the scant 62 million people in the U.K. are the ones holding all these pages hostage because they insist "athletics" is different than "athletic." The 350 million people in North America, plus the other English-speaking countries of the world do not demand such monolithic and dogmatic separation of "athletic" and "athletics." For all the rest of us, athletic is the adjective and athletics is the noun referring to the same broad-base of sports competitions which include swimming, volleyball, boxing, etc. TommyKirchhoff (talk) 12:56, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
This is an Indian news publication discussing "athletics" in New Zealand: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Athletics-New-Zealand TommyKirchhoff (talk) 13:28, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Professionalization of college athletics

edit

If professionalization of college sports will be discussed in this article, it needs to be from a truly global perspective. Any attempts to include large tracts about the United States only will be trimmed down to roughly one or two sentences. --LauraHale (talk) 02:02, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Undue tag

edit

@Prisencolin:, could you explain why this was tagged? I'd like to resolve the tag. pbp 02:45, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

It was quite a while ago so I don't remember exactly. I think it had to do with the fact that US college sports is far more prominent than any other country (except occasionally Canada) therefore it should be given more weight. I don't remember honestly and you can remove the tag if you'd like.--Prisencolin (talk) 02:49, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, there wasn't any mention of U.S. college athletics at all. I put in a paragraph that summarizes College athletics in the United States and removed the tag. pbp 03:06, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adding more detail

edit

For the ‘World University Games’ section, provide more details. State where they were held, why the name changed and more about what the games entail. For the ‘United Kingdom’ portion, talk about why the Boat Race between oxford and Cambridge is such a big, annual event. Maybe mention how many people show up and where the event is held.
