Maori name, paihamu

edit

I have removed the part where the Maori name was given with a explanation of its meaning as "good forager" supposedly deriving from pai (good) + hamu (forage). Actually, it's pretty obvious that "paihamu" is just a transliteration of "possum". First sign of dodginess with the supposed meaning is that the word order is English, with adjective first, then noun, whereas Maori requires noun then adjective. The second sign is that hamu (more properly hamuhamu) is actually not a noun, but a verb. Forager would be kaihamuhamu. Unfortunately Maori TV and some Maori educational institutions have been known to encourage this kind of false etymology, when they should know better. Why is it morally wrong to throw around dead animals? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.91.90.250 (talk) 14:42, 20 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
