Critical IPA errors

edit

The characters given as examples for some of the phonemes are matched with the wrong IPA entirely.

  • 將 is a homophone of 張 and so share with it the initial [tɕ].
  • An example of [ts] in Cantonese would instead be 戰. [ʈʂ] which is present in Cantonese with characters like 中, identical in pronunciation to the Mandarin, is not given at all.
  • 鏘 does not have initial [tsʰ] but rather [ʈʂʰ] which is also the initial for 昌.
  • A correct example for [tsʰ] would instead be 車 or 炒.
  • Instead, this chart gives the initial for 昌 as [tɕʰ], i.e. the Mandarin Pinyin 'q', which is a phoneme absent from Cantonese entirely. (By the way, as a native speaker who learned Mandarin late, that sound was quite difficult to learn to pronounce).
  • 是 is pronounced identically to 士 with initial [s], and [ɕ] is absent from Cantonese.

Given how many critical errors are in this chart, I would strongly advise sources to be provided for it. I am not sure if perhaps the pronunciations given here reflect a different dialect of Cantonese aside from Hong Kong Cantonese or Guangdong Cantonese.
