Coney Island, NY
editIt may be accurate to say that a local legend exists regarding a Sligo sea captain from 'last century' naming the New York Coney Island, but it might perhaps be made clearer that this legend cannot itself conceivably be true. The NY location was certainly known by the name Coney Island by 1816, with proposed etymologies much older than that. So this 20th century Irish skipper came along at least a century too late to have done what he is credited with.
I appreciate that this tale resides under the heading of 'Folklore', but as it stands it may be taken to inhabit the oral history branch of that genre, and I suggest that it should be made clearer that it is no more plausible than the local myths of 'faeries and mermaids'. - @Grubstreet: I've updated this paragraph, with a book by a Sligo historian as a reference. That ship was sailing in the 18th century (not the 20th), making the naming theory more plausible. However it remains just a theory, one of numerous discussed at Coney Island. Declangi (talk) 00:26, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that's much more satisfactory. Thanks for letting me know. Grubstreet (talk) 15:25, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
