Early life and education

edit

Darlene Koldenhoven was born in Chicago on October 9, 1950. She started singing along with her mother at an early age and made her first public performances at age 3. Young Darlene started piano lessons at age 9. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Master’s degree in vocal performance (magna cum laude) from The Chicago Conservatory College graduating as music educator and singer. She taught music at elementary school in Chicago for six years. In 1976, Darlene had a double hysterectomy due to complications from endometriosis and doctors recommended her to move to a warmer climate. In the winter of 1978 she took her old Toyota Celica on Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles and settled in West Hollywood. There she started supporting herself by giving piano and singing lessons, singing back vocal for various studio recordings utilizing her perfect pitch and four-octave voice range, and eventually developed a successful career as performing and recording artist.
