Page Move

edit

I propose we move the page to Diggle, Greater Manchester, instead of the current title, in line with the other Saddleworth villages. See for example Lees, Greater Manchester, and Greenfield, Greater Manchester. M A Mason 21:25, 28 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sounds sensible enough to me Aquilina 02:00, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Infobox added

edit

I've just added the infobox, but I'm not all that happy with the data I've used. I can't find data for the population; and for grid references I used this site for the OS grid refernce, which seems reliable enough, but I've used this site for the latitude and longitude. I zoomed right into Diggle and took down the reference given and used that. It's a reference for Diggle but my only qualm is that it isn't the official reference if you see what I mean.

If I'm just being pedantic, ignore me ;) M A Mason 01:16, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, this makes perfect sense. I'm not sure where to find population totals for the various Saddleworth villages (it'd be great if we could find these). In the meantime, OS and lat and long co-ordinates can be verified via a number of sources (see here. I'll double check the settings from the official OS online mapping system listed there. The co-ordinates were correct! Great stuff!... Now on to the population problem.... Jhamez84 00:15, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is this really appropriate?

There is home-made 'Grandpa Greene's' ice-cream sold on the towpath near to Ward Lane. At the bottom of Ward Lane a traditional feast of Fish and Chips can be eaten from the Pringles Fish and Chips shop. If there's so little to say about a place - and I'm not saying that's necesarily the case with Diggle - except that it's got a couple of pubs, somewhere that sells ice cream and a fish and chip shop, ought one not to question whether it's worthy of an encyclopedia entry?

The language doesn't seem very encyclopedic in any event - "a traditional feast of Fish and Chips" - traditional to the village of Diggle? ---- Eric 16:57, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree that it's not a very encyclopedic paragraph, certainly, and not very notable information. I don't see why Diggle shouldn't have an article though. Needs work I know, and I will work on it soon enough. M A Mason 17:34, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't see why Diggle shouldn't have an article either, I was just commenting on the free advertising for Pringles Fish and Chip shop :) ---- Eric 19:21, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Good hehe :) I've removed the offending paragraph. M A Mason 20:23, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Category Oldham

edit

Why does the Oldham Category keep being deleted and reinstated? Is there some dispute about whether Diggle's in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham or not? ---- Eric 02:22, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Some stupid edit war between two anonymous users. They're doing it to all the saddleworth articles. I'm hoping they'll give up soon... Failing that we'll have to get them banned or something. M A Mason 11:13, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
No-one is disputing that Diggle is in OMB, but vandals like M A Mason and his cohorts seem to insist on adding a category'Oldham' to the article. 'Oldham' is the name of the article about the town, and they isnist on naming the borough category after the town article rather than the borough article which covers the the OMB articles. Diggle after all is in OMB not Oldham 88.104.44.134 18:30, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'd appreciate it if you'd get your facts right; I haven't edited the category, so how you can accuse me of vandalizing it I don't know. So let's not throw around accusations, ok? Great. Now, over on the the wikiproject greater manchester page this debate is taking place in order to gain consensus, which is how wikipedia works. You, on the other hand, have removed the categories without doing so, with discussing it, and often (always?) without a summary. That is not what we're about here. I livein Diggle. It is administered by Oldham Met Borough but is not in OLdham. It was part of the admin county of Gtr Manchester but this now has no admin power. The village is and always has been for the past 1000 years part of the Historic West Riding Of Yorkshire and would take an act of Parliament to remove this status. This has never been enacted. There is an ongoing Oldham problem mainly in relation to the name of Oldham town being used for the OMB rather than the more sensible approach such as Trafford and Tameside. New signs are going up soon on the historic Lancs/Yorks boundaries hopefully then everyone will know which county they live in ie Oldham town is in Lancashire and has never been anywhere else. The Metropolitan Counties were simply superimposed over the historic ones which they were never intended to replace.
