Direct-controlled municipality of the People's Republic of China → Municipalities of the People's Republic of China – It just call municipalities it there isn't really any official translations of Zhíxiáshì (直辖市). — ASDFGH =] ^talk? 01:24, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

• Oppose: Our general East Asian translation is 'direct-controlled municipality', and besides, the full (and best) translation of 直辖市 is 'direct-controlled', and it is not uncommon usage to call prefecture-level cities 'provincial municipalities'. —HXL's Roundtable and Record 03:55, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Direct-administered versus Directly-administered

'Direct-administered municipalities of China' is without question an extremely awkward wording. Can we change this to 'Directly-administered municipalities of China'? Is there any official or standard translation? Geographyinitiative (talk) 05:45, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Move

We'll eventually need to move this. Apart from the slightly awkward translation "Direct-administered", this translation without further context doesn't distinguish the municipalities (using the same 市 in Chinese) that are directly administered by the provincial governments without an intermediary level.

What we're actually talking about here are province- or provincial-level municipalities, which is how I've always seen it in English and much terser than some full explanation of "under the direct administration of the central/national government of the PRC" is going to be. — LlywelynII 02:22, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

FWIW, in the move above, both of the "opposes" had badly-taken points. 1st, it doesn't matter what the Chinese or our translation of it is. We should park this page at the most WP:COMMONly used WP:ENGLISH name for this concept regardless. 2nd, the English word 'muncipality' in Chinese contexts is almost entirely restricted to these provincial-level ones. The smaller municipalities (which do need to be distinguished if we start talking about "direct control") are almost always translated "city" since there's less focus on the importance of their local government. — LlywelynII 02:26, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
