Categorization

edit
  Resolved
 – Correctly categorized as of December 2012.

I added the category "Cat breeds" since the article was flagged as not being categorised. Having said that, domestic shorthairs are a "breed" in the informal sense as it is commonly used term to categorise cats that aren't one of the registered breeds. Some purists may argue that therefore it isn't a breed, but it hardly seems very sensible to categorise the article as "Cat non-breeds". Kerry (talk) 05:48, 12 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's categorized under Category:Cat types now. It definitely shouldn't be in Category:Cat breeds. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 17:46, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pulled nonsense

edit

 – No objection to removal of non-encyclopedic material in a year and half.

I pulled the following as it's a) unreferenced, b) opinion, c) redundant. Feel free to reformat and repost with appropriate citations. "Short haired cats can weigh up to 5-10 kilograms. They are very friendly and happy cats. The cat in the picture is a tabby cat. They are also friendly. If you want to buy one they cost around $200 but it is worth the price. They are great for families with children. The DSH cat does not need alot of exercise but give them a healthy diet so they don't get overweight." Jedikaiti (talk) 22:22, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Terminology

edit

This article needs to consistently use "a domestic short-haired cat", or "a domestic short-haired" for short. There is no "the domestic short-haired" much less "the Domestic Shorthair"; it is not a breed, so the definite article does not apply. While CFA and a few other registries use the capitalized phrase "Domestic Shorthair" this is for their own internal show categorization and pedigree registration purposes. This can and should be mentioned in the article, for completeness, but the term should not be otherwise used in Wikipedia articles, as it constitutes a form of viewpoint-pushing, namely the advancement of peculiar CFA/TICA/FIFe breed jargon like "Shorthair" (capitalized, unhyphenated, and without "-ed") over plain English, in which "shorthair" is not a word. Since this is not an actual cat breed at all, proper usage even in breed articles would be "The British Shorthair is a short-haired cat breed", not "a shorthair cat breed" (much less "a Shorthair cat breed"). Using "shorthair" or "Shorthair" in this article in particular is doubly inappropriate, as original research. [[A breed is defined by artificial selection by selective breeding; random mixture of whatever cats are in the neighborhood is the exact opposite of a breed, and WP cannot assert or imply that mongrels are a breed.] — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 16:21, 14 December 2011 (UTC) Revised,  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  21:27, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Non-pedigree cats around the world and why?

edit

There are many puspins (Pusang Pinoy) in the Philippines, the pusang kalye, the domesticated shorthaired street cat (and feral cat). 124.106.129.189 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:13, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's unclear what this observation has to do with the question in your subject line, or what it is you are suggesting with regard to this article.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  22:25, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
how questionable was that? If you say it is unclear, then it's incomprehensible that puspin breed is. Feedback is necessary. 130.105.198.152 (talk) 02:17, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Pusang Pinoy to refer to this? 136.158.59.144 (talk) 07:27, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Again, you're going to have to be clearer what it is you are trying to conveny. This article says nothing about "puspin" or "pusang Pinoy".  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  19:40, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed Merge

edit

I am proposing to merge Domestic short-haired cat and Domestic long-haired cat into one article possibly under the name Mixed-breed cat.

Currently there is no page to link when referring to moggies of any hair length and most of the information on the two pages is repeated. They'd be better off having their own sections on a shared page. Traumnovelle (talk) 09:03, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Support merging into a new "Moggy" page. SilverTiger12 (talk) 19:30, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Given the lack of opposition but also little discussion I'll start with creating a draft at Mixed-breed cat. Anyone can feel free to add onto and improve it. Draft:Mixed-breed cat. Traumnovelle (talk) 04:07, 12 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

:Given the lack of opposition (or really any interest) I am going to just be bold and do it. Article doesn't have perfect sourcing but neither do these two. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:33, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Guess I can't close this given I am technically involved. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:35, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Note current page for merging is at Moggy as 'mixed-breed cat' is a misnomer. Traumnovelle (talk) 05:46, 28 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Traumnovelle, can you move the interwikis for the domestic short-haired cat to the new moggy page? SailorGardevoir (talk) 09:39, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't know how to do that sorry, could you do this yourself? Traumnovelle (talk) 09:42, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's kind of why I'm asking you. SailorGardevoir (talk) 10:13, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It seems to be something on that happens on Wikidata, not Wikipedia. Traumnovelle (talk) 21:35, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
