Dutt High School → Datta High School – Converting discussion to a proper RM. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:32, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
An editor recently moved this article from Datta High School to Dutt High School without discussion. There is no single correct way to transliterate Bengali. Wikipedia's choice of name should be guided by WP:COMMONNAME. In the context of this high school in Netrakona (or Netrokona):
- "Dutta" has the most Google book hits. It's used by the Ministry of Education,[1] Bangladesh's largest English-language newspaper,[2] and others.[3][4]
- "Datta" is used by Banglapedia, the national encyclopedia of Bangladesh,[5] and other reliable sources.[6][7][8][9]
- "Dutt" appears in one Dhaka Tribune article.[10]
The University of Calcutta's Calendar from the early 1900s used all three transliterations.[11][12][13] Newspaper The New Nation sometimes uses Dutta, sometimes Datta.[14][15]
WP:COMMONNAME points to using Dutta, although Datta is not far behind in usage, so not unreasonable. What is clear is that Dutt should not be used. For now I'm returning this page to the status quo ante, Datta High School. Further discussion on the relative merits of Datta and Dutta is welcome. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:38, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
- After reviewing your assessment I agree. Thanks for looking into this Worldbruce. - Samf4u (talk) 12:04, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
- Invited Tonmoypaul.71 to participate. They have, in edit summaries, made an argument from authority for Dutt, without citing reliable sources or considering that Wikipedia's naming policies don't always align with a school's current branding (see, for example, recurrent talk page discussions regarding UCLA / UC Los Angeles / University of California Los Angeles / University of California, Los Angeles / University of California at Los Angeles) Also invited Train2104, Beyond My Ken, Shirt58, Arjayay, and NinjaRobotPirate, all involved through Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Tonmoypaul.71 pagemoves, to this discussion. --Worldbruce (talk) 00:25, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- Unless some other evidence can be produced showing that one name is considerably preferable to the others, given that reliable sources for "Dutta" and "Datta" are pretty much equal, I would support the status quo ante and use the original name of the article, "Datta High School", with appropriate redirects, of course. I oppose keeping the article at "Dutt". Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:08, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm mostly just here in an administrative capacity. I'd rather not get involved in content disputes, but you can ping me if you need any admin assistance. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:24, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- Copying my comments from the WP:ANI archive - and apologies if I was then or am now telling you things you already know - here:
- It should be "Datta" in English, but it would appear that it is known as "Dutt" in English. In languages that use Latin script <u> usually represents "ooh"-like sounds. Due to the fact that English orthography basically preserves the way English was pronounced 700 years ago or so, it also represents "aah"-like sounds, like the <u> in the previous name of Kolkata. It also appears that we may well have a young person writing about their own school, as often happens, so be gentle. Remember What the Thunder Said.
- I was quite obviously wrong about the "is known as "Dutt" in English" assertion. From memory, this was based on Facebook page most probably created by students of this school. I will promptly WP:Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon myself for that in due course.
- It possibly should be "Datta High School" but if the reliable sources verify that is more commonly known in English "Dutta High School", then so be it. "Dutt High School" is obviously wrong.
- As for my somewhat gnomic reference, what the thunder said was "Datta. Dayadhvam. Damyata."

- Comment: I think trouts all around may be appropriate, but my analysis of the above is:
- Strong consensus to move, it's just that nobody has had the courtesy to format their !vote so as to make it obvious.
- Strong consensus that Datta is preferred to Dutta, similarly obscured, and no strong feeling either way but it's unanimous.
- In view of that I intend to close as move to Datta High School as proposed. I note this overwrites a previous move 19:48, 26 September 2017 Tonmoypaul.71 (talk | contribs | block) . . (48 bytes) (+48) . . (Tonmoypaul.71 moved page Datta High School to Dutt High School.: This speling was wrong.I am a student of dutt high school.Pleas don't change the name.) @NinjaRobotPirate: It looks like we need to call on you in your administrative capacity, or on one of your colleagues. Tonmoypaul.71 has exerted ownership and moved the page again, against the consensus formed in the discussion above (to which they were invited twice, but in which they did not participate). They seem to have learned nothing from their first block. A second block to avoid further disruption, a return of the page to name "Datta High School", and perhaps move protection would all be welcome. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:05, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
