References

As it's becoming increasingly important to have articles on Wikipedia reference-checked, I have started to recall the websites I used when I first wrote this website. This a rough and imcomplete compilation. The main article has not been revetted for internal citaions to make it all neat like on other articles. So, while this is a start, there's still a way to go. Other contributors to the article should list the websites and other reference materials that were used for thie contributionsl below. Ttownfeen 04:31, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

expert in what?

the end of the intro section is clearly missing something. Gee is an expert in... what, exactly?tej 09:18, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

I assume education law. It does sound a bit weaselish, and the article would be just fine without it. Ttownfeen 19:17, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
Someone must have removed the reference to expert, because the word isn't in the article. Forgive me if this is explained elsewhere. JaneSprat (talk) 01:29, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Successful?

There are some at WVU who would say the opposite. These were the days when the school would brag about it's #1 party school ranking on items sold in the school bookstore. DarkAudit 03:46, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

And how is the president to stop people from partying exactly? Voice-of-All 09:06, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

First tenure at The Ohio State University

Why is there not a section about his first tenure at The Ohio State University? And for that matter, why section for his presidency at the other universities he was at prior to Vandy and Brown —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.91.37.33 (talkcontribs)

Quite simply, because no one with a knowledge of his tenure at Ohio State has contributed to that section. If you have something to add, please don't hesitate to improve the article. --Ttownfeen 01:26, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Vandy Hoax

We can grab the Archive.org copy of the article from http://web.archive.org/web/20031229152518/http://www.vanderbilthustler.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2003/03/14/3e71a2dbcee09, but I sadly have no idea how to add that to the references, if it's even possible. 72.205.51.231 02:19, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

school pages

I don't know what, if anything, this means, but I find it interesting that while Vanderbilt has already updated its page on the chancellor from Gee to Zeppos, that Ohio State still has Alutto as interim president (as of Sunday at 8pm). --Ttownfeen 01:00, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Protection

I overheard a grad student telling another grad student how he was having his students insert false information (namely that Gordon Gee wanted to be an astronaut) as a project to show them how unreliable Wikipedia is. Note that most of the IPs being used for the vandalism are OSU IPs. So I've locked the page for a week for unregistered editors to put a stop to it. Parsecboy (talk) 10:45, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Massey

Probably want to reduce the information to a one-to-two-sentence blurb. --Ttownfeen (talk) 03:26, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

That might be best. As I noted in the edit summary, I was rather tentatively removing it, if only because there might be objections. I'm not sure it really merits inclusion at all, but I'll certainly defer to anyone else who has strong feelings on it. Esrever (klaT) 05:50, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Obviously, it doesn't have to be the highlight of the bio, but I don't think its inclusion is without merit. --Ttownfeen (talk) 20:40, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

I added a paragraph about Gee's involvement with Massey Energy because there was no mention of it in the article. It was removed almost immediately. I feel it was well sourced and contains important information. I'd like to comply with community guidelines, but as the entire text and all citations were removed, I'm not sure how to proceed here. 73.154.113.196 (talk) 01:49, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

As noted earlier on this talk page, a sentence or two at the most should be mentioned, and certainly not in the lead section. The edit was mainly about the company, not Gee who is the subject of this particular article. It seems to imply wrong-doing on his part and uses terms like "widely believed" instead of anything concrete. I believe the edit is a violation of WP:BLP. Bahooka (talk) 04:48, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

EGGLC

I'm reverting to my version with the picture of the EGGLC. I can't find any specific guidelines re: which images to include in WP:BLP, but an image of the EGGLC seems to do a good job summarizing his problematic tenure at Brown, and the Brown section is currently without an image. Feel free to re-revert and have a more complete discussion here. - Mgcsinc (talk) 19:10, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

I just reverted a similar edit again. The picture is neither vandalism nor new to the page. Please discuss the issue here if you'd like.- Mgcsinc (talk) 01:21, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Proposed move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Moved. EdJohnston (talk) 20:14, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Gordon GeeE. Gordon Lee E. Gordon GeeCommon name. It looks like E. Gordon Lee is preferred in sources. [1] Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 22:03, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

What? His name isn't Gordon Lee; it's Gordon Gee. Why would the page be moved? Esrever (klaT) 23:44, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Gordon Gee is definitely the common name, and Lee is definitely not the correct surname. 72Dino (talk) 23:47, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Gordon Gee still appears to be the common name per The Chronicle of Higher Education. The initial "E." appears to be added in more formal references rather than common ones. 72Dino (talk) 01:37, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Phew, this all makes a great deal more sense now! His page on Ohio State's website calls him "E. Gordon Gee", too. I'd have no objection to the move. Esrever (klaT) 05:50, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Ugh...disagree with the move

The initial is included in the formal name, but his common name is "Gordon". --Ttownfeen (talk) 01:53, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

There were two opposes, two neutral and one support (mine). Surely this move was an error. If Ttownfeen wants to add his opinion, then I'd be happy to renew the discussion. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 04:29, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
In his move proposal, Marcus Qwertyus stated that 'E. Gordon Gee is preferred in sources.' The mandate of WP:COMMONNAME is to use the name by which sources usually refer to the person. The 'E. Gordon' bit is not preferred due to its greater formality, but due to its widespread use. If there is data to the contrary, we should reconsider. EdJohnston (talk) 20:13, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
I think the move should be re-evaluated.--Ttownfeen (talk) 15:29, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
During the recent "scandal" involving him, no one in the media referred to him as "E. Gordon Gee". That is his formal academic name (many academics who go by their middle names use initials for their first names in scholarly work), but every indication has been that he is commonly known as "Gordon Gee". --Ttownfeen (talk) 23:05, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Most university presidencies held by an American?

The reference for this statement is highly dubious - it states "Said to have held more university presidencies than any other American, Dr. Gee had been OSU's president from 1990 to 1997." It cites no primary source, and no statistics. This is also from an oncology journal, not an education or social sciences journal. This statement is considered questionable unless a better source can be found. Irregulargalaxies (talk) 19:55, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

It's something that would be hard to prove unless somebody went through an exhaustive search of every person who has ever served as the president of a college anywhere in America. Perhaps the wording should be adjusted accordingly. --Ttownfeen (talk) 23:01, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Second Term at WVU

The article states that Gordon is "serving his second term as President of West Virginia University." How can this be if he just started there? Ileanadu (talk) 20:13, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand your question. He's in his second term as president (which he just started), after serving a previous term there. What's unclear about that? Esrever (klaT) 03:50, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Since Gee has been at WVU for almost a year now, I would suggest updating this section with some of the actions he has taken, such as announcing a plan to raise enrollment to 40,000 and creating a Center for Big Ideas under the leadership of former West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton. (See, for example, this article from the Charleston Gazette.)
