Talk:Edmund de Waal/Archive 1
COI Tag
editThe COI tag does not mean the article is not neutral, it only says that the person who wrote the article has a conflict of interest and there may be a neutrality problem. Please do not remove the tag again. Jons63 (talk) 02:23, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Huh?
editI deleted

because it's very unclear to me who did what; if they're books, pamphlets, or what; & just what relevance they have, especially if he's such a well known potter... Trekphiler (talk) 11:09, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Oh, shut up
editI would delete or rewrite
- "I love the ‘visible imperfections’ that come from the gestures of throwing and handling clay and the fierce symmetries of industrial porcelain, the vessels of the chemical laboratory. My pots span both these histories. Working in Japan has given me a feeling for how pots can work in the hand, how their heft, balance and texture matters. So my pots are slightly bashed, slightly crooked and tell of their making.
- "For the last eight years I have also been making installation groups. I called them ‘cargoes’ of pots, an image that came from the images of sunken cargoes of porcelain.
- "There are few images of groups of porcelain – we are much more used to seeing single pieces in isolated splendour – and this has haunted me. Some of these installations were for Modernist houses as with my work at High Cross House in 1999. Some were for austere art galleries – as with the Porcelain Room made for the Geffrye Museum, 2002-2003 and shown at the Kunstindustri Museum in Copenhagen in 2004. For my solo show at Roche Court in 2004 I made three installations that respond to the Arcadian landscape in which the gallery sits. This focus on installation has allowed me to be ambitious in making pots that challenge architectural space. My installation groups focus on the ways in which subtle modulations are manifested through repetition.
- "Recent projects at Blackwell, the Lake District mansion designed by Baillie Scott, and the National Museum and Gallery in Wales, have extended this practice.
- "Much of my recent work explores colour through hidden interstices and openings. These pieces look at how colour change through shadow.
- "All these pots were made in porcelain as I believe that it is the porcelain that is the matrix for East and West, the sung dynasty and the Bauhaus.
- "It remains to be a powerfully contemporary medium.[1]"
It's pompous, self-serving, & irrelevant; it could (should!) as easily be summarized in a couple of lines. Trekphiler (talk) 11:21, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
COI tag
editPlease could someone explain in what way the article on De Waal shows a conflict of interest. I found it accurate and clear. Some of the booktitles should be reinstated. De Waal is an important author on ceramics as well as a practising potter. The fact that he has had works published by the Tate Gallery (London) and Thames and Hudson is evidence of this. 92.12.4.230 (talk) 17:12, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
- I have re-written the article in a more encyclopaedic style (e.g. referring to him as "de Waal" rather than "young Edmund", as in a previous version!) and I have deleted all the digressions (e.g. about Bernard Leach, who is not the subject of the article). I think the COI tag and the wikify tag are no longer needed and so I have removed them. Marshall46 (talk) 22:45, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Personal publicity?
editThe whole tone of the article reads a little like a self-aggrandising advertisement, rather than a factual, encyclopedic article about a person. It's quality would be improved by a rewrite that simply states the facts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.108.58 (talk) 08:44, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello, my name is Andrea Kennedy and I am working for the artist and writer Edmund de Waal as a freelance studio assistant.
I have been asked to work with the Wikipedia community to bring the Edmund de Waal page more up to date with the inclusion of recent works, new publications and more relevant images.
I have read up on the conflict of interest guidelines and would really appreciate assistance from more experienced editors to help get the Edmund de Waal page into better shape.
Very much looking forward to working with the community to accomplish this. Thanks! LostRobots (talk)13:00, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
- It would help to have the following:
- The desired information or changes that you'd like to make.
- Ensure it seem as if these topics will 1) meet your objectives while 2) also maintaining an encyclopedic tone, objectivity, etc.
- Provide reliable sources, such as books, newspaper articles, journals, etc. that is a source for the information you'd like to add.
- There are also instructions here.--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:31, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- I saw the previous sections about tone and rewrote some of the initial sections and renamed the sections.
- Some comments about what has been written so far that may help with direction for changes: Quotes by the subject should be used sparingly and strategically, if at all. It's far better to have quotes or paraphrased content from art critics, journalists, etc. There are some incomplete thoughts, tense and tone issues that remain, but that can be worked on. Let me know if any of this isn't clear... or if my edits need to be tweaked. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 12:08, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'm closing it for now, but please re-open the request when you've got a specific request. If you need help getting started, please feel free to leave a message here or on my talk page. I would be happy to help out.--CaroleHenson (talk) 02:17, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello, we have uploaded a number of new images to the Wikimedia website today. Would it be possible to have these included in the Edmund de Waal page throughout as there are currently no existing images within the text. LostRobots (talk) 13:11, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've inserted one and will do some more when I have time. Pelarmian (talk) 18:35, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- That's great thanks so much! Any chance we can replace that pot image with something more current as well? It is over 10 years old and is not really representative of the work he is best known for. Possibly something more current would be better showcased here? LostRobots (talk) 17:37, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
- Also, could we get rid of 'at Gagosian Gallery' on the Main Image caption? This is factually incorrect as the image shows the work in situ at de Waal's studio instead. Thanks. LostRobots (talk) 12:09, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
