"Commander" and "pilot"

edit

Hello @Mtpaley:

Regarding your reversion, I searched a while for appropriate links for "pilot" and "Commander" before editting, and it seemed to me that Aircraft pilot and simply Commander, respectively, are the most relevant ones. These aren't limited to aircrafts, and indeed it is no coincidence that rank titles are similar. See e.g. Aircraft pilot#Space (which admittedly might be a more precise link), or even United States Space Force, which mentions "Commander" as being both its highest military ranks and NASA spacecraft pilots.

In fact, air forces themselves borrowed their vocabulary from naval ones, see Commander#Royal Air Force or Commander (United States)#Air Force depending on which side of the Atlantic you live on.

  • Hi. In game the title commander just seems to mean someone who owns a ship and is not a rank in any military sense, everyone is CMDR X. There are several sets of in game ranks such as "Federation Ranks". but these are just arbritrary names along a in game progression, you could be a Federation Post Commander + Empire Count but the Count has no more connection to real world titles than the Post Commander does (interestingly there is no actual rank of plain commander), they are just unlocks to get shinier ships. The Elite CMDR naming started from the original release in 1984 so that sets a limit on what it could be based on. I see where you came from with this edit but I don't think that the commander in Elite has anything to do with where commander takes you. Mtpaley (talk) 20:30, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Credits

edit

Why on Earth is a random forum post being used as a source for credits? When that post states "This list can I get just by reading posts on the forum, and meeting the company's logo" - so, it's not an authoritative source in the least, and it is bizzare that this would be used when there is a perfectly good list of credits available in the game. e.g. the two programmers listed here are one of the two "principle core programmers" and one of the four "lead gameplay programmers", and omits all other categories entirely - there are over 100 people credited as some type of programmer, many of which have more senior roles than the ones listed here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DarkStarSword (talkcontribs) 06:19, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Should we add more information about gameplay and community?

edit

I was thinking of adding more information about the gameplay and the community, heres what I'm planning on adding:

- Information on player groups such as fuel rats, hull seals, and the DSSA.

- More in-depth information about credit-earning activities.

- Some basic lore and such.

I think we should include some more information, but not super in-depth, as there is already an Elite Dangerous wiki with more information.

I also think that we should keep any player activities in this page as opposed to other pages. Data-Chan (talk) 01:12, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Details out of date / some gameplay info out of date too - general update needed.

edit

Descriptions about thargoids are out of date, i.e. still future-tense rather than present/past-tense.

Also a few lists of activities could be more fully fleshed out too - mining is not mentioned, anti-piracy, trade barely is at all, nor reacting-to &/or causing factional-states or whole-solar-system-states, such as famine, civil disorder, war, or infrastructure failure, and of course PvP.

Also, wings are not mentioned in terms of SMALLER than >3.5 million? players' play,.. (how does a reader get any idea HOW players interact from reading the article as is? ) ...in terms of what-to-expect when playing small groups ;

the HUD visual indicators of your wingmates / positions on radar, making finding each other / protecting each other in combat for instance, making teamplay rewarding inamongst the immensity of the game universe, compared to solo explorer play.

or also, protecting-each-other in wings, when taking it easy, in trade-wing or mission groups, making for a more, while-ALREADY-at-your-desktop kind of play, especially since the introduction of cruise-control, which has REDUCED THE BORDEOM aspect of long distance travel somewhat.

Several of the early reviewers might've have changed their minds about how boring the interstellar travel now does not HAVE to be, with supercruise and switching to something else on your desktop/console (if also possible on console).

Similarly, some HISTORIC community-events could be mentioned as-could community events in-general, neither of which are mentioned ATM,

such as of historical ones, the very large trip to the center of the Galaxy, by i think it was, 90? several hundred? pilots simultaneously, requiring a lot of planning and synchronisation of players all around the world, UNCOMMON if not unique amonst MMOs, and perhaps a first in sci-fi spaceflight sims, etc

---

The page could also have some links to 3rd party sites, such as INARA, the now shutdown EDDB, and generally describe how there is a lot of SUPPORT for learning and thriving in-game. 101.119.141.17 (talk) 14:43, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
