Making Edits to Framing

Hello all, I am planning to make edits to this page to correct the framing of executive order 8802 as being passed primarily to help Italian and German Americans. Sources have shown that the executive order was passed directly following FDR's talks with the Black leaders and activists mentioned in the latter half of the article's opening. Added links to related articles. Removed link to 1941 Harvard–Navy lacrosse game, as it is only tangentially related to 8802: while it concerns an incident of racial discrimination in 1941, it is obviously not the only such incident, and no logic of inclusion would suggest either that it is the most relevant, or that all other such incidents also be mentioned here. Except of course that it was a very public incident, involved a national military academy and the president's alma mater, the most prestigious school in the country. That's why it has a Wikipedia entry. It's quite unlike run-of-the-mill racist incidents. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 18:11, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Mmm, this order was issued on 25 June 1941, a good six months before the United States entered the Second World War, so the remark here about discrimination against German-Americans and Italian-Americans hurting the war effort seems to be mistaken. Anyhow, the order came about about a threatened march on Washington by Afro-Americans that was scheduled for 1 July 1941. The order may not have explicitly said do not discriminate against black people, but that is what it really about. It is true that after December 1941 that the order was used to protect German-Americans and Italian-Americans, but it seems doubtful if that was Roosevelt's main motivation in June 1941 when he issued it. --A.S.
