Uncited Claim of 2018 Controversy

edit

I was just reading this article and noticed the comment previously next to the 2018 winner, Deborah Nicholson:

> Community outrage and a petition to revoke this award followed with several female veteran developers calling this award given to Deb as "disgusting" on twitter.

The given source doesn't mention the outrage at all and I've spent 10 minutes or so search around the web and can't find any mention of why and to what extent her winning was controversial (like at all; no mention of outrage, a petition, or any controversy). With that in mind, I'm deleting that line from the article though of course happy to be corrected if someone does have a reliable source outlining what went on. -Foggalong 13:15, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Changing to "FSF Awards" format

edit

FSF have just announced the creation of a new annual award, the "Free Software Award for Projects of Social Benefit". The two awards will probably share some characteristics - such as where they ceremony was held, and who was on that year's selection committee. So I'm thinking that the two FSF awards should be documented on one page, which should be FSF awards or something. Suggestions welcome. If there's no discussion, I'll go ahead soon and add the new award to this page. Gronky 20:08, 16 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

This is a good idea. Please, go ahead.--CalPaterson 17:41, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
Since there still hasn't been confirmation about my suspicion that these awards will share common ceremonies and judging panels, I've put basic info about the new award at Free Software Award for Projects of Social Benefit, but I've mentioned on the Talk page that it could be merged into this article soon. Notability

edit

A web search for fsf+award shows that this award gets mentioned on Slashdot, Linux.com, LWN.net, Heise.de. I'm not going to advocate strongly for this article, but that seems to meet the notability criteria.

I'm still thinking about whether Free Software Award for Projects of Social Benefit should be merged in here. Comments sought. --Gronky (talk) 10:53, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Anything the FSF does is linked from a number of free software/tech sites. That doesn't mean their every action is due an article. Not every award distributed by a notable organisation is notable in itself, especially outwith the org. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:40, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
How else would the notability of an award show itself? --Gronky (talk) 11:46, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Is there any indication that the recipients benefit in some way from it? Do people strive to win it? Think about how awards such as Oscars, Olympic medals, Nobel Prizes establish notability. What makes this award notable in itself, in the way that these things are notable? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:28, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I'll try examine it's notability from that angle (but I don't think "strive" describes the relationship between actors and Oscars, or Nobel prizes and scientists). I'll try to find whether any winner has ever proudly mentioned that he's won it or if any winner has been described as an fsf-award-winner (such as when being introduced when speaking at an event). --Gronky (talk) 12:11, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing which would establish notability. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:59, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
See list and post-list note in here-below section. --Gronky (talk) 16:11, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Outdenting

edit

I'm just going to dump links here as I find them. The value of what I find should be evaluated in a week or so. --Gronky (talk) 15:21, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, that seems like enough already, so I'll resume only if someone credibly disputes the value of these expressions. I've omitted all announcements from FSF. --Gronky (talk) 16:11, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
