Coordinates

Anyone care to add the lat/long coordinates? Google maps doesn't have high res sat images of Dubuque and I've never been there to guess by way of the street map. It only has one door?

The article contains the following text:

It only has one door, the entrance at the small shack at the bottom of the hill.

I don't begin to understand this. It seems to imply that the elevator is a tourist ride only, with no way of getting on or off at the top. Can anybody confirm this?. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 19:01, 10 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I've located the top station on Google Streetview, and it quite clear from the signage there that you can get on and off there. I will remove the offending sentence, as it is uncited and clearly incorrect. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 19:04, 10 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Can confirm. I grew up in Dubuque and have ridden this elevator many times. You can board at either the top or the bottom. There is no ticketing at the bottom (4th Street), so if you board below you pay for your ride once you reach the top. Claim to be the world's steepest railroad

Although it is not stated in the Wikipedia article, on the Fenelon Place Elevator's own website (and several other places) it is claimed that it is "the world's shortest and steepest railroad". (At one place on the website it rather cannily states that "it has been called the ..." but the heading on the homepage makes the claim unambiguously. The website calls the elevator a funicular railway, so it would be appropriate for it to be judged for this claim against other railways including funiculars.

It seems clear that this claim is incorrect regarding the gradient. For example, both the Stoosbahn and the Katoomba Scenic World Railway are steeper (the latter may not be a true funicular but rather an inclined railway, which would still allow it to invalidate Fenelon Place's claim).

Would it be appropriate to add a line to the article to reference this incorrect claim? Is it enough to source authoritative sources about the gradients of each, or would we need a source that actually disputes the Fenelon Place website's claim, in order to avoid a strike for Wikipedia:No original research ? I would remove the claim completely in this article but wait till you can get a more definitive source or list. You could replace the claim as steepest in the world with empirical measurements if they are available. ✶Quxyz 19:08, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
