Arnold Bax's seventh symphony, though "in A-flat" according to the score, is not in major (some 20th-century works without mode specified are, some aren't, some are too fluid) but in minor (its first movement begins and ends so, at any rate, just as his first symphony "in E-flat" has a first movement which begins and ends in minor- a similar case is found with the early symphonies of Egon Wellesz.

Actually, counting Shostakovich quartets or Rheinberger organ sonatas- the latter sequence does include a work in G-sharp minor - is perhaps a bit like counting Bach or Chopin preludes, since the former composers seem to have intended a sequence covering all 24 key/mode combinations without repeating any, Shostakovich "missing" 9 and Rheinberger, I believe, four. ) Schissel | Sound the Note! 17:41, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

(Similarly the Alkan etudes in all the minor keys, though the one in G-sharp minor, at over 20 minutes long - the opener to the three-movement solo concerto... is tempting to mention anyway.) Schissel | Sound the Note! 20:21, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Note: another piece in G-sharp minor is Julius Röntgen's quartettino (for string quartet) in this key. Schissel | Sound the Note! 04:27, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
