- On 30 May, between 10:34 and 10:53, User:Captain scarlet renamed 104 articles on French railway stations, against the agreed guideline (Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/France_and_French-related_articles#Naming_of_French_railway_station_articles). - Oppose' undoing these moves. Looking at for example [2], it seems Captain scarlet was actually undoing undiscussed page moves. Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/France_and_French-related_articles#Naming_of_French_railway_station_articles was not a well-attended discussion, and bypasses the usual WP:RM process so IMHO does not represent a fair consensus to move. - Comment: Captain scarlet's edit summaries suggest that the moves were undone because "X railway station" might have been a better format than "X station". Perhaps we can gain consensus for "X railway station" rather than moving the pages repeatedly. Failing that, I would support the proposal as written, for consistency with railway stations in every other non-English speaking country, which don't use article titles such as Estación de Madrid Atocha or 長崎駅. - I'm inclined to support per WP:USEENGLISH. Few English-speakers have any idea what gare means, and English-language materials seem more likely to use English-language descriptive phrases like "Granville station". — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 05:42, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
There appear to be two conclusions from this discussion.
- The old 'Gare de ..' style of naming is not wanted.
- There is disagreement over whether to use a suffix of 'station' or 'railway station'
Therefore (1) I will reinstate my request to the admins to reverse the moves made by Captain scarlet, and (2) I propose that further discussion on the naming ('station' v. 'railway station') should take place at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/France_and_French-related_articles#Naming_of_French_railway_station_articles. Colonies Chris (talk) 10:24, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
