The Anglo/Saxon Chronicle records Eustace the first was to marry Godiva, murdered villagers then lied to Edward regarding the circumstances. Godwin was told to punish the villagers but refused after finding the truth which brought about the Revolt of the Earls. Eustace's deceit was finally exposed as he died around 1049, Godwin and his sons were given back their lands and earl Siward marries Godiva/Godgifu.
