reference to de La Rue

edit

"Throughout his political career, Ibingira was primarily preoccupied by gaining power. He was vague about his beliefs, and only publicly committed himself to ones that had widespread acceptance" - I think that the above statement taken from de La Rue needs qualification. I believe there is prejudice here. Most if not all politicians want power, but it sounds is if Ibingira is held to a different standard, and if this is written by a political competitor. - to say that he had vague beliefs is wrong in my opinion. This is about one of the most significant politiansin Uganda, and he had strong opinions. for example he openly opposed the tilt towards socialism, attended a meeting in Nairobi in 1963 against Obote's wishes, etc. 192.55.54.54 (talk) 19:36, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

trip to the United States

edit

"Under the cover of checking om his ranch in Ankole, he traveled to the United States to raise funds .." If you have been to Uganda, you would know that this is ridiculous. Ankole is in the South-West of the currently, and the only international airport, Entebbe, is in the center. No one can be fooled by driving South as opposed to flying from Entebbe. Also, at that there were so few travelers that everybody knew immediately who left or who arrived by air. To me, this sounds like gossip. The same for 'raise funds ..'. Do we know where and from whom he raised those funds; or who he bribed with those funds? 192.55.54.54 (talk) 19:42, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • That's a claim from Kenneth Ingham, a well-established historian (rather sympathetic to Obote though, if I recall). I also question how exactly one pretends to be in Ankole while flying to the US, but that's that. Also, no one mentioned "bribes". -Indy beetle (talk) 20:40, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Even though from a well established historian, a statement that does not make sense should be questioned. Maybe he wrote those sentences from hearsay, and not realizing how unrealistic that is. He would not be the first scholar to make such misstep. Knowing the geography of Uganda and how small was the traveling(by air) population at that time, I suggest that a correction would be a positive step here. Or a mention that it is unlikely that things happened as described by that particular historian. 24.55.6.244 (talk) 20:58, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • As it stands now, the best we could do is "According to historian Kenneth Ingham, Ibingira traveled to the US under the cover of going to his ranch in Ankole..." But we can't just totally discount what a professional historian states as a factual claim without actual evidence to the contrary of their claim (see WP:OR, we have to show what the reliable sources say and can't just decide upon our own story) unless its totally ludicrous or extremely old. It would better if you had alternative source which said something different. -Indy beetle (talk) 07:07, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I have read it. Actually, I remember that in late 1980s, it was used in an african studies class at a university I was attending. I think it should be mentioned in his bio — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.55.54.48 (talk) 14:01, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
