GAN?

edit

@Epicgenius and : I want to nominate this to be a GAN, but think that there is plenty of work that needs to be done to improve this article. Do either you have a suggestion of places where this article could be improved? Thanks.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 19:36, 26 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

What work do you think needs to be done? I'm not sure there's any more sources right now that give any more important detail... Also, I think a GAN might need to wait till this is nearly/completely open. Until then, we probably won't fully know the layout, final features, tenants, ridership, or even the final name of the station itself. ɱ (talk) 20:41, 26 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I agree this may need to wait till the station is opened. Certain aspects of the station will not be completed for a while as Ɱ said above, so the article isn't likely to meet the standard either. epicgenius (talk) 21:30, 26 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 23:18, 26 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

I propose that Grand Central LIRR terminal be merged into Grand Central Terminal. This is another article for a future expansion of the exact same train station that could be placed as part of a section on Grand Central Terminal. JE98 (talk) 20:28, 19 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Oppose: Sorry, in many ways it's considered a wholly different terminal. We'll see how it's titled and considered when it opens, but there's enough unique about it (and well-enough sources) to deserve its own article, even in the possibility it's considered a subsidiary to Grand Central. As well, the Grand Central Terminal article is complex and convoluted enough without delving into attributes of this enormous new terminal. ɱ (talk) 20:42, 19 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oppose Too early to tell how this terminal will be categorized. Cards84664 00:23, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oppose Worthy of its own article, especially because the Grand Central article is already very long as it is. This is properly sourced and notable. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 22:20, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oppose. This is not "another article for a future expansion of the exact train station", as there is only one article about the expansion (this page). The main Grand Central Terminal page is already pretty long, so this is a proper split per WP:CONSPLIT. Aside from that, I don't see a policy-based reason why this should be merged, as the LIRR terminal is notable as a standalone structure. Considering the length of the GCT article right now, we need more of that page's content to be split, not less. – Epicgenius (talk) 17:40, 21 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak oppose. There is some logic in merging, but given the amount of attention this new entity will be attracting in the next year, and the existing size of the GCT article, leaving it as a standalone article makes sense. But I do hope people can resist the WP:RECENTISM urges to pack this full of all sorts of trivia until it rivals Grand Central Terminal in size. This will have 20% of the number of platforms as the existing terminal. So, 20% of the article size would be a zeroth-order estimate of how much should be written about it. Good luck with that :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 18:03, 28 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

@Kew Gardens 613: See here. "the East Side Access terminal -- which could be known known as Grand Central Madison if MTA approves the name". I think it's too early to make the move you did. ɱ (talk) 16:56, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

There was an announcement today.--Kew Gardens 613 (talk) 17:53, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@, I agree with Kew Gardens 613. Governor Hochul said "Grand Central Madison" would be the official name just this afternoon. – Epicgenius (talk) 22:06, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
News to me. ɱ (talk) 05:14, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Owner

edit

Who is the official owner of GC Madison? Is it actually the MTA themselves or is it Metro North or LIRR? Cards84664 21:42, 18 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

New entrances

edit

Had I read the article more carefully, I would have inspected more carefully this morning. Anyway, the article says all the planned street entrances are open. No; about half are open but I don't remember which ones, besides the main one that I entered at 43rd St & Mad. Jim.henderson (talk) 20:59, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I had a look at the entrances today. The One Vanderbilt, Dining Concourse, Biltmore Room, and 44th Street elevator seem to be open. Not sure about the other entrances, though. Epicgenius (talk) 16:04, 26 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I can verify that the connection to Grand Central North's 47th St cross-passage is open as well. I'm surprised they got the Biltmore Room open in the one day since I was there yesterday. oknazevad (talk) 05:09, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Rename?

edit

Should the article title be Grand Central Madison? ɱ (talk) 21:43, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not sure. I'm leaning towards keeping the current title because of Newark Broad Street station (think of Newark Broad as a title). Cards84664 22:07, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm inclined to agree with a rename. This one doesn't need "station" at the end, which is only there because of WP:USSTATION, which says leave off "station" if it's not part of the common naming. It's not like Newark Broad Street where the "station" serves to diambiguate from the actual namesake street. (Though really it should be capitalized if it's actually as part of the name or in parentheses of its there solely for disambiguation purposes; the titles of Wikipedia articles may be written in sentence case but they're not sentences in running prose so don't use disambiguation the same way as one does in running prose. See Talk:Sun Bowl (stadium). But I'm not here to change the guideline, just griping that it's wrong headed.)
Though, having actually been there (was on the first train with the governor and ton of rail fans) it's pretty obvious the got the name by shortening what it was originally intended to be called, the Grand Central Terminal Madison Concourse. All the signage inside the terminal, both Metro-North and LIRR areas, identifies it as simply "Madison Concourse", and the destination signs on the train and at Jamaica simply say "Grand Central" just like the MNR ones. Makes me wonder if the idea of naming it as a separate station was a late decision. either way, the name doesn't really need the "station" on the end, as it's readily and uniquely identifiable without it. oknazevad (talk) 22:37, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Perspective from a west coaster -- when I first saw all the coverage of "Grand Central Madison" -- I had no clue they were talking about a station. So, to that end, I like the inclusion of the word from a user experience perspective. -- RickyCourtney (talk) 21:35, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay but that doesn't mean it's the WP:COMMONNAME. I think almost all of us are inclined to move it, does someone want to open a formal proposal here? ɱ (talk) 21:37, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Don't know if we need a formal move proposal, considering we already have a pretty unanimous discussion about it. WP:NOTBURO and all that. It should just be moved. oknazevad (talk) 23:49, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
