Talk:Gum Nebula

Gum 12 or Gum 56

edit

The article starts with the words "Gum Nebula (Gum 12)" yet the link at the bottom is to an article called "Gum Nebula (Gum 56)". That article appears to be about the Gum Nebula I know.  Randall Bart   Talk  00:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

United States and Europe

edit

The line "The nebula is out of sight from most of the United States and Europe" is not quite as international as it could be. Is it visible in Japan? Mongolia? Canada? Of course not. It should say "The nebula is out of sight north of X latitude."  Randall Bart   Talk  00:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

When will it reach us?

edit

The leading edge of the Gum Nebula is only 450 light years away. I seem to recall that it's expected to reach Earth in about 3000 years. If this can be verified it shoudl be included.  Randall Bart   Talk  00:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, that is an interesting factoid Fig (talk) 20:57, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
In a million years since the supernova, it's just over 1000 ly wide, so it will take about another million years to reach us. It's not accelerating. Its front edge is as close to us as 450 light-years, while its back edge lies about 1,500 light-years away. As well as being attenuated by expansion and the interstellar medium, it is also likely to affected by the solar system's magnetosphere so its matter is unlikely to penetrate the solar system or be visible/tangible in any meaningful way. 185.13.50.186 (talk) 16:05, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
