Model and network support variations

For consistency with other smartphone articles and to provide the complete coverage required for featured article status, a table listing individual models of this phone and their network compatibility details should be added to this article. ViperSnake151  Talk  18:20, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

The article doesn't require it I don't think, but it's up to you whether you want to include it or not. As per WP:NOTEVERYTHING, "information cannot be included solely because it is true or useful. An encyclopedia article should not be a complete exposition of all possible details, but a summary of accepted knowledge regarding its subject." This guideline applies to Galaxy S III too. Yea, I was considering adding a model/network frequencies table comparison of all the models, and we could also present the different versions in summarized form. I started making a table a few months ago based on this table from XDA, M7 PDAdb spec sheets, XDA wiki article and others, but haven't got around to finding all the specs. For now I've just summarized them in the intro paragraph in the model variants section. – The first request seems like a more consistent disambiguator for this article, given the fact that its successor's article's name is currently HTC One (M8). However, there is controversy regarding this, and the other option is to move HTC One (M8) to HTC One (2014) (to make the articles' common disambiguator by their year instead of their model codename). Please specify which of these two moves should occur in your response. Thanks. • I agree that using codenames is a bad way for disambiguation. I originally proposed renaming either with the (year) or (x generation) after the main name, and since we've agreed on the (year) naming scheme for this page, we can go ahead and move the M8 article to HTC One (2014) for consistency. - M0rphzone (talk) 18:28, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

It appears that this move request discussion lasted for barely more than two hours, hardly enough time for adequate discussion. Personally, I believe this resulted in an incorrect move. The official name of the 2014 version of this phone, the name it is marketed under, and thus the name the public knows it under, is the "HTC One (M8)"[1][2]. It's not a question of what we prefer - this is factually the name used by HTC and by the wireless providers that sell the device. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 21:27, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

That was the rationale I used, but it may be a temporary name until HTC finds a consistent naming system. I'm fine with using the year as the dab, since the codename may be confusing or unclear. - M0rphzone (talk) 21:57, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

• @Barek: I had opened the discussion, and the two editors I noticed that seems to be in a bit of a edit war in regards to the name seemed to resolve it amongst themselves (so I withdrew the discussion after they had resolved it amongst themselves.) Thanks - while I believe the appropriate name is "HTC One (M8)" due to the official naming and all marketing materials used by HTC, consensus does appear to lean towards using "HTC One (2014)". All I ask is that we keep this discussion open at least a few days to allow for adequate discussion among all parties that may want to comment, but whom may not be online as frequently as some of us. I just feel years are a bit more natural of a disambiguation, because they are essentially the 2013 and 2014 models, and it follows the precedent of the Nexus 7 (although their disambiguations also include "version" in them, which I think should be reduced to just (2012) and (2013) like here). Oh, and before this, I just had "HTC One M8" as the page title (which makes it in line with the naming conventions of older HTC models, plus the brackets may be a stylization disallowed by MOS:TM) but referred to as HTC One "M8" in the lead. And by the way, my carrier's website just calls it "HTC One" (they had pulled the, ahem, Old One, from their website shortly before its release) ViperSnake151  Talk  16:29, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

I am curious as to who is your carrier? Are you outside the USA? I know HTC as well as the two largest carriers here (AT&T and Verizon) use the name "HTC One (M8)" on their websites, and Verizon does the same in their store displays. But I haven't checked providers elsewhere in the world as yet.

I agree that years seem more natural; but because the company is using (M8) in all of its marketing material, that is the WP:COMMONNAME that people will recognize if they are looking for information on the device. The actual problem is how should Wikipedia then handle the 2013 version. The common name has no disambiguation, and using a year comes more natural, but then that goes against the pattern established by HTC in naming their M8 version - thus we're stuck in an inconvenient place. But, that inconvenience should not mean we mess up the naming of the M8 version just to suit our personal preferences. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 16:44, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

It's SaskTel. Bell calls it "The all new HTC One™ (M8)", Telus says "The all-new HTC One (M8)", Rogers says "HTC One (M8)". I guess we have no choice: "HTC One (M8)" is now the title of the page again per WP:COMMONNAME ViperSnake151  Talk  17:32, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Update: the official HTC website is using M8 and M7 to distinguish between the two, so the 2013 article should probably be moved to HTC One (M7). - M0rphzone (talk) 17:17, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

I would consider that a WP:COMMONNAME violation, since HTC only retconned the use of M7 in branding after the release of its successor. Most sources called this one "HTC One", as intended, but only started finding ways to disambiguate after the M8 release. "HTC One (M8)" is a common and official name to the successor, to an extent. Definite articles

Not using a definite article before the device name is incorrect grammar. This a product, not a service, so we use definite articles. There is also nothing in the MoS that says definite articles shouldn't be used. If we follow conventional style, we should be using definite articles for all smartphone products. This is no different than articles on cars or planes. ViperSnake, I'm not sure why you're insisting on removing definite articles, but it is the convention to use "the" before the device name, and almost all major publications do this in their articles on smartphones, tablets, products, cars, etc. - M0rphzone (talk) 22:39, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

It is already definite unless it is talking about a specific instance. Again, see Talk:.NET Framework. But is "HTC One" a "name composed of common and proper nouns" or a "name of [a] theories, effects, devices, scales, and so on modified by a proper noun used as an adjective"?
