Historical Significance of Unique Design

edit

This bridge is an important landmark of innovation in structural design. Inclusion of the following details would help readers of various levels appreciate this bridge's historical significance: 1) First time use of heat treated steel: 50000 psi working strength, heat treated, developed by American Bridge Company (Steinman 207). This fact is not only significant as the first use of high-strength steel in a civil structure but is related to the failure of its sister project, the Silver Bridge (Resseler 163). This observation already exists in the Wikipedia description but could be more specific and cited. 2) Unique hybrid design in which top chord of stiffening truss is combined with suspension cable at midspan. By juxtaposing tension in the suspension cable with compression in the top chord of the stiffening truss within the same members, efficiencies are gained in both functions (Steinman 200). The stiffening truss is approximately “four times as rigid with two-thirds as much material” (Steinman 206). This fact is not overly technical as anyone viewing the bridge from the side can see a unique shape in the midspan.
