The articles Horizontal plane and Vertical direction could be merged with this article. Shanker Pur (talk) 18:32, 15 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose Horizontal and vertical isn't a good enough article (I would delete it). The lead is unintelligible, the body is horribly confusing between "vertical" at the human scale and issues of intersecting verticals at the planetary scale. The author of this new, duplicative article is promoting it so heavily as to not only try to merge away existing articles, but also to sockpuppet (and be blocked for it) in its support. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:46, 22 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
The article, including the lead, can indeed do with some improvement. The terms "vertical" and "horizontal" are apparently simple but are actually deceptive. Thus the answer to the question, "Is it possible for two vertical walls to be parallel?" seems to "yes" in some situations, and "no" in other situations. Creating new duplicate articles is not an appropriate solution to that (and I see that you've started several such). Certainly not when they're badly written, more confused than the initial articles and a mass of WP:OR. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:36, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
The situation as it is now, there are 3 articles with overlap. Vertical direction duplicates passages from Horizontal plane and there are some images in the latter which are also in the article Horizontal and vertical. Perhaps, this could have been avoided but that is where we are now. The thing to do is to merge the three articles along the lines suggested by Pyschonaut and hopfully end up with a better article. • Support These all seem to discuss very similar concepts. Andy, if you're dissatisfied with the quality of this article, won't merging others into it improve the quality? --BDD (talk) 21:10, 29 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Walls and floors, strange statement

edit

Vertical and horizontal #Walls and floors For instance, on a wall which runs along a longitude, an insect cannot crawl east. Really? Peter Horn User talk 01:25, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

By definition, a wall running along a longitude runs north to south (or south to north) so an insect cannot crawl east, with the caveat that the wall is assumed to be infinitely thin so that no insect can stand on the wall's top.
However, I have issues with the text in the flat Earth approximation. I believe the horizontal and vertical directions are reversed. How can the surface of the Earth be vertical? How can walls be horizontal? How can horizontal planes meet at a vertical? I'll leave the page like it is for a few days / weeks and if nobody objects or beats me to it, then I'll change it. 148.64.27.20 (talk) 11:20, 20 October 2021 (UTC) ApassReply

The y-axis on the wall is vertical but the one on the table is horizontal.
