Graph?
edit- I would like to add this graph to the Insulin types section; however, I don't think it meets the criteria for non-free use. Nawtion (talk) 15:56, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
Renamed
edit- Dec 2014 : this article was renamed from 'Insulin therapy' to 'Insulin (medication)'.
Could add section on cost
editSince cost is mentioned a few times perhaps we could mention the approx cost of the various formulations. Trends in Medicaid Reimbursements for Insulin From 1991 Through 2014. may be a good source - It shows that the USA cost, even of generic insulin, has risen many fold over the last 20 years. - Rod57 (talk) 11:46, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Terminology: "prandial" versus "bolus"
editI have reverted the removal of the term "prandial" and the link to its Wiktionary definition. This is a technical term which may not be familiar to Wikipedia's general audience, but which is at least as usual in the technical literature as "mealtime". It also better describes the purpose of prandial insulin dosing in a basal-prandial insulin regimen than does the term "bolus", which merely means a dose that is delivered and released all at once, without any delayed-administration or delayed-release features. The term "basal-prandial" is more descriptive than "basal-bolus", and no one says "basal-mealtime". Please do not remove the term "prandial" or its definition from this article.

- Change the link to the WP article on the topic. People say mealtime doses often yes. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:08, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
- People say "mealtime insulin" or "mealtime doses", yes—but not "basal-mealtime" to describe the regimen, only "basal-prandial" (or other less specific terms such as "basal-bolus", "intensive insulin therapy", or "flexible insulin therapy").
- I hadn't been aware that there was a Wikipedia article on the concept Prandial. I agree that when linking from within a Wikipedia article, Wikipedia links (on concepts) are to be preferred to Wiktionary links (on words) in most cases.

Move discussion in progress
editThere is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Lithium (medication) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 23:15, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
New sections + redirects
editI have created overview sections for basal insulin and prandial/bolus insulin in the principles section of this article, so that Basal insulin, Bolus insulin, and Prandial insulin can be redirected to the principles section. Alternatively, if people think basal and prandial insulin regimens should have their own "top level" sections, that is another option. Either way, having at least an overview section for the two "types" of insulin therapy allows for those three redirects to stop being red linked in other articles where they are used. bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 06:43, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Including information on open source insulin production
editI'm not sure how or where this could be included, there are many sources available but don't know which meet the reference standards for medical articles.
The articles often also include helpful contextual information about the monetary and social cost of insulin prices (especially in the US).

Could add a section on sources
editWhere does medicinal insulin come from? Are there natural/animal sources or is it all synthetic at this point? The Earth if there are natural sources, which animals are the most common "donors"? And if it's synthetic, who makes it?
(etc.) Membender (talk) 22:06, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Insulin for medical use is almost exclusively synthesized with recombinant (genetically modified) bacteria, originally k12 strain E. Coli. No idea what is used today but I assume they still use transformed k12. No point in changing a winning recipe. Fachidiot (talk) 20:59, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
