Balls?

edit

I know there's nothing wrong with the wording, but the first thing you're going to think about is testicles, is there no other way to say "a ball (the dance event)" in any different way than... balls? --Nyawmeow (talk) 06:41, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Independence Day vs Winter War memorial day

edit

For the past couple of decades, Finns have mistaken their Independence Day for a Winter War memorial day. The 20 years of independence we had before the war broke out have been forgotten. — JIP | Talk 12:28, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Helsinki and Ilkka Remes

edit

There are Independece Day festivities all over Finland, not just in Helsinki. The article as it stands doesn't seem to really capture this. Also, is that Ilkka Remes mention really necessary? One might think there are also other works of art dealing with the Finnish Independence Day festivities. 82.128.188.213 15:25, 6 December 2006 (UTC) Matti Nuortio, Oulu, Finland P.S. The Finnish term, itsenäisyyspäivä, should not be capitalized. I'll fix this.Reply

The Jäger Myth and Capital I

edit

What the heck? Someone reverted my edit of the word 'itsenäisyyspäivä' back to 'Itsenäisyyspäivä'. Why is this? In Finnish, names of holidays are not capitalized. Also, the legend about two candles set for jägers passing in secrecy is more or less just that - a legend. It can't be verified by noteworthy sources. Should it be removed from the article? 82.128.188.213 22:33, 6 December 2006 (UTC) Matti Nuortio, Oulu, FinlandReply

Wiki-style

edit

The style of writing is quite clearly what I'd call "Finglish"--this becomes clearer as one progresses down the page. The paragraph(s) abou the President's Ball should be in its own section. I will try and do this later, but feel free to do this faster. --Hansh 00:13, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fixed. The article was moved, so the license needed to be updated. Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 12:27, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

What closes on this day?

edit

I assume it is a bank holiday and that most businesses are closed. But what about shops, restaurants, museums? MyPOV (talk) 10:20, 3 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why Russian

edit

What does the Russian term do in the article? Finnish and Swedish are official languages in Finland, Russian is not.--82.203.191.249 (talk) 19:43, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Awkward sentence, etc.

edit

This reads a bit awkward:

When a year had passed since declaration of independence, 6 December 1918, the academical people celebrated the day.

And I am not sure what is meant by "academical people". --Mortense (talk) 19:49, 10 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
