Home State necessary?
editI noted that somebody added Home state in the infobox. Is it necessary - I mean, the candidates does not represent a certain area (like in UK, the prime minister represents a constituency). I am neither opposed nor support the addition. Just want to know the opinion of others, as for me the addition sounds like a candidate represents certain area. w.tanoto-soegiri (talk) 15:42, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Candidates
editI have commented out the people that other editors have assumed will be candidates in the presidential election. The criteria for nomination depend on the number of votes in the legislative election. The results of this election will not be announced until 9 April, so there are as yet no candidates, merely people who have said they will stand. Although it looks likely that SBY, Megawati and Jusuf Kalla will run, it is not yet certain and therefore their standing is currently the same as the other people on the list who have announced their intention to run. Cherry-picking SBY, Mega and Kalla is either a violation of WP:NPOV or WP:OR. Davidelit (talk) 04:10, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
The lead for this WP entry is too long and full of speculation. It should be severely reduced after the final announcements of candidates are made on May 15. After that date, the Candidates section might still retain some of the "possibles" (e.g., Wahid) as a historical note, but the text would need to be reframed as a narrative rather than a list. Martindo (talk) 01:15, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed. Let's see which of us gets there first.... Davidelit (talk) 04:28, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Opinion Polls
editI cut the % figures from the Angus Reid poll because using them is like comparing apples-and-oranges in the sense that the January poll did not present the same candidates as are now running.
Although the detiknews poll in the chart shows a distribution close to the tempointeractif poll, the former's neutrality is undermined by a large ad for Megawati-Prabowo on the web page that readers reach via the WP link. I'm not sure how to resolve this issue because web site profitability is often "left to the winds" in terms of accepting ads via third party agencies that potentially contradict the web site's own content. IMO, polls that show a more even distribution are more credible than those which show an SBY victory on the first ballot. However, it would be great if we can get additional sources as evidence -- rely less on those that give the *appearance* of bias. Martindo (talk) 13:15, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's a fair piont about detik.com, but it also carries ads for SBY (there's one on the site right now), and Mega-Prabowo (on the election section of the site right now). Given that this is all three candidates, does that balance out? Incidentally just about all the news media, including newspapers and TV have campaign ads, so if we pushed this point too far, it would be almost impossible to find any sources about the election. Is there a precedent for this in coverage of elections in other countries? Davidelit (talk) 13:42, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, one improvement to the excellent chart displaying candidates and polls would be to list direct sources. The AsiaOne "survey" link is actually a Singaporean news article about the jilbab vote, replete with that country's media biases about Indonesia. Can we get a link for the National Survey Institute which was being quoted by the AsiaOne article? Martindo (talk) 13:15, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I think the opinion polls would not be appropriate if it is placed in the main infobox. I would rather place it in one of the section of the article. Main infobox is appropriate for official and exact data, and maybe not for bias opinion polls. passport90## (talk) 12:23, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
- I am in agreement with passport90##. It is a bit untidy if it is placed in the infobox. I never saw such thing in other countries' election article (especially UK). w.tanoto-soegiri (talk) 23:37, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Info Box
editHey come on, this box is ridiculous. It's way too big and dominating. Yet - there's so much white space. Just because there are parameters in a box doesn't mean we need to fill them in. Indeed, just because there is a box, doesn't mean it has to be used (although no need to go that far). What can be done? remove the photos? Make them smaller? If the box template can't be made to work, maybe we should consider removing it and/or making a new one. --Merbabu (talk) 10:49, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- PS - I dropped the image sizes. a big improvement but not quite perfect. --Merbabu (talk) 10:56, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Well, it now looks better on my screen (approx 1024 pixel). Haven't tried it yet on my 20 inch laptop (1680 pixelx1050)w.tanoto-soegiri (talk) 14:46, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Suggestions for touchup
edit1. Why is the Economist cited as the source for SBY margin of victory in the lead? It is secondary. There are abundant Indonesian *primary* sources cited in the table about results.
2. Last paragraph of Schedule should be updated post-facto with actual dates, past tense verbs.
3. Why no mention of people omitted from the lists of registered voters? One of my stepdaughters was disenfranchised this way. Estimated number of such people should be cited. The corrective ("go to polling station with your KTP") announced by Constitutional Court should also be included in a brief discussion of this type of irregularity. Martindo (talk) 00:43, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- The article has not been worked on since the announcement of presidential candidates other than updating the final results of the election. I understand your concerns, but until someone (probably me) gets a chance to do a comprehensive rewrite and update of the article, these issues can't be written up so simply without the help of someone who can read both English and Indonesian sources to cover the complexity of this election. Arsonal (talk) 01:45, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough. Researching the exact dates is low on my priority, which is why I didn't make the changes myself. Which primary source do you consider best for the lead? I can do that edit simply and quickly.Martindo (talk) 06:16, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
