1947 law suit against Alfred Hitchcock
editI was surprised this isn't mentioned in the article, but Fiske filed a law suit for $1,250,000 against Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant in New York in May 1947. Hitchcock had announced in August 1945 that he was intending to film a modern-language version of "Hamlet", with Grant in the starring role, and Fiske claimed this infringed upon his "Hamlet in Modern English" (published 1941). Hitchcock's project was dropped after a few months and didn't go beyond some initial pre-production planning with producer Sidney Bernstein. After various delays, the case finally went before the New York Federal Court in October 1954, by which time Fiske had removed Grant's name from the suit and dropped the damages to $750,000. Judge William Bondy halted the trial after 11 days of testimony and directed the jury to find the case "not proven". Bondy later ordered Fiske to pay $5,000 towards Hitchcock's legal fees. The trial generated a lot of interest in Hollywood as a victory for Fiske risked opening up the flood gates for other litigation cases. The case was covered by Variety -- see articles published on 29/Aug/1945, 05/Dec/1945, 20/Feb/1946, 28/May/1947, 12/Jan/1949, 27/Oct/1954 and 02/Mar/1955. I've written up an outline for the Hitchcock Wiki if anyone wants to incorporate details into the Fiske article: http://the.hitchcock.zone/wiki/Hamlet (I'd add it myself, but I'm not sure if others feel the case was notable enough or not) Davepattern (talk) 10:12, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
