edit...to the person who can successfully navigate their way through the following convoluted sentence, and explain what was "saved to the public":
His appointment in 1782 to the treasurership of the navy, which carried with it a pension of £3200 a year, at a time when the government was ostensibly advocating economy, caused great discontent; subsequently, however, he received from the younger Pitt the clerkship of the pells, a sinecure for life, in place of the pension, which thus was saved to the public.

- Presumably the meaning of this sentence is that, once his pension was replaced by a sinecure, the annual £3200 were no longer drawn from the treasury, ostensibly freeing them up for public services. Dcoetzee 00:01, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Recently the file File:Isaac Barré by Gilbert Stuart.jpg (right) was uploaded and it appears to be relevant to this article and not currently used by it. If you're interested and think it would be a useful addition, please feel free to include it. Dcoetzee 00:00, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Blind in Which Eye?
editThis article says variously that Barré was blinded in the right eye or left eye by his wound. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out which is correct. The later portraits seems to show him seated in left profile, with the right side shadowed. Probably it was the right eye, since he was wounded in the right cheek? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.15.139.37 (talk) 23:15, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- Ultimately he lost the sight of both eyes by 1784; not surprising the post of Clerk of the Pell, awarded during the decade, was a sinecure.Cloptonson (talk) 21:57, 21 May 2016 (UTC)
Suggested improvements
editThere appear to be a number of factual repetitions, chronological order is confusing and there could be better concentration of information under respective section headings - much of the information on his military career, for which there is already a section, appears under the section Political Career.Cloptonson (talk) 22:05, 21 May 2016 (UTC)
- Have made a start, having the time, I have created a new section Early Life and concentrated the military service information under Military Career section.Cloptonson (talk) 08:58, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Pronunciation of name
editI have lived in Wilkes - Barre, since the mid 80's and nobody seems to know the correct pronunciation of Barré's last name? I would also add that I have never seen it spelled Barré. Nosehair2200 (talk) 16:42, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
