Estonian

edit

The Estonian of the same name seems to be "Jaan". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.132.249.167 (talk) 11:20, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Evidence?

edit

Is there any evidence that "Ivan" is derived from "Iōánnēs / Johannes"?

Or is it possible that the Christian priesthood in newly christianized Slavic lands, picked the Slavic name most similar to "Iōánnēs / Johannes" and declared that it corresponds to it?

What about the possibility that it is related to the Sanskrit "Jeevan"?

Etymology

edit

I seriously doubt the correctness of the etymology described in the article. It is far more probable that the Church picked the Slavic name closest to the biblical one and just declared that it is of biblical origin, as a christianization method of connecting traditional Slavic names to the Bible. As someone said, what is the evidence for the biblical etymology? And how come the exact same name exists in various Slavic nations that were christianized at different times and by two different christian denominations, Orthodox and Catholic? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.188.160.50 (talk) 26 November 2021 (UTC)
