Death

edit

News sources are reporting that he died on December 31, 2013. [1] 108.14.255.165 (talk) 19:16, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I can verify that as well. Read here. 99.95.221.248 (talk) 14:19, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am seeing this in several reliable sources. I think a correction will be in place soon.—John Cline (talk) 19:22, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Further, it appears that the sources cited do not state 1 January 2014 as the date of death; rather, those Wikipedia editors are reading the date of the article and assuming that to be the date of death. Edits changing the date to 31 December 2013, however, seem to be hastily reverted to the revision showing 1 January 2014. 76.175.17.28 (talk) 19:34, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

According to the current entry, James Avery died today on January 1st. But the article linked to the story does NOT state his actual date of passing. According to CNN.com, his publicist confirmed that he passed on Tuesday. Therefore the date of death is incorrect.

″Actor James Avery, who played the beloved Uncle Phil on the hit 1990s sitcom ′The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,′ died Tuesday, his publicist confirmed. He was 65.″

Year of Birth

Sources seem to differ was he 65 or 67 years old? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.34.211 (talk) 20:13, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Actually, 1946 seems to be what most sources report now. I'd be in favour of a change.. – Connormah (talk) 20:41, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
1945 also being reported... – Connormah (talk) 20:43, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
CNN reports his age as 68 as does the NY Daily News. But multiple sources still say he was 65, so it seems that no one really knows as of now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.156.128.86 (talk) 21:49, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

1948 seems to be the most logical date of birth. This is based upon his bio "He joined the United States Navy shortly after high school graduation and served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969." Had he been born in 1945 he would have been 23 and in the war versus 20 being born in 1948. Most people join for 4 years and would be out by 22. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.63.171.51 (talk) 22:37, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

1948 is the correct year, after extensive search, i came across this from familysearch. We know his mother's names is Florence J Avery, his wife was Barbara Waters (has a son named Kevin Waters from a previous marriage) and after marrying Avery became Barbara Waters-Avery (ignore the missing dash) and we know that he has lived in New Jersey..this is probably the best source we have..--Stemoc (talk) 00:09, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Change his birthday to 27 november 1948. (according to imdb)

S.suetens (talk) 07:32, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

IMDb is not always a reliable source and better sources have been found with his correct birth year. 1945. Gloss • talk 07:35, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

There is great confusion to his age actually. Many sources are saying 68 and many others are saying 65. His publicist said he was 68 but and interview back in 2003 had his birth year as 1948 making 65. 79.97.208.89 (talk) 11:06, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I believe that November 27, 1945 should be changed to November 27, 1948. Thank you.

I believe the following is reliable source for his age. It states his birth year as being 1948. It is not verified but I would say the publicist made a mistake when she said his age was 68. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KT9X-5S7 79.97.208.89 (talk) 03:36, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

– The stats of the actor prove him more popular than other "James Avery"s. However, if popularity is not strong criterion for primacy, is the actor more significant than the Canadian baseball player, the US Civil War soldier, or the American colonist? George Ho (talk) 22:14, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

The colonist, the baseball player, and the soldier aren't that popular. George Ho (talk) 07:43, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
And neither was he, until his death. We do not change Wikipedia titles based on the influx of one event and if you think the article will be increasingly popular for years to come, you are mistaken.STATic message me! 23:27, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm not using one event as a reason. I figured that hundreds of others go to view the actor's biography because he portrayed one regular character in one show and recurring character in another. --George Ho (talk) 01:23, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Recent News (death)

edit

With his recent death, there has a been a large surge of more recent coverage on him (albeight mostly from blogs, not so much news stations). If nothing else, the main people watching this article should prepare for that and/or look into them. He seems to be making quite a splash outside of the 'formal' news sources. 67.10.113.107 (talk) 23:34, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

edit

I think his year of birth should be 1948. The following link [3] which gives information from United States Public Records gives his date of birth as 27 Nov 1948. I would consider this to be the most reliable source. Before his death and before his publicist announced his age as 68 when he died sources online had his date of birth as 1948. I would say that the publicist has been in error. Also the following pdf [4] which shows details of an interview with him which shows his year of birth being 1948. 79.97.208.89 (talk) 08:30, 3 January 2014 (UTC) 79.97.208.89 (talk) 10:05, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

That first is absolutely not the most reliable source, because it is primary. We do not construct articles from primary sources, we allow secondary sources do interpret primary sources for us and then we write what they figured out. Regarding your interview, there are many many sources saying '45. There is no good reason at this point to usurp them all for a single interview that says '48. Someguy1221 (talk) 11:24, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand what you mean about it not being a reliable source because it is primary? I would think that a primary source would be the most reliable source but I'm guessing there is some rules on here I am not acquainted with. I don't edits on here much. About you saying that there have been many many sources say '45 and also there have been many saying '48, they all come from just the once source, the publicist. Now it seems the publicist maybe in error. I think that the year of birth should be changed back to 1948 or something in between like is done on other pages like 1945 or 1948 until it is fully verified. This change has only come because of the announcement by the publicist. 79.97.208.89 (talk) 12:05, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree, his publicist is not really a reliable source, people lie about their age, women make themselves younger, men makes themselves older..but again if you read the article, and quote "He served in the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1968–1969, after graduating high school. It means that he was either 20 or 23 when he graduated high school, I'm not sure how it happens in USA, but an average human world over graduates high school between the age of 18-20..we had a similar problem regarding Jessica Chastain's d.o.b, all the media sites were calling her 32 and one of this "primary" sources is what led to her d.o.b year being changed from 1981 to 1977..--Stemoc (talk) 23:19, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ya given his years of service in the Navy after high school it would seem more plausible that his year of birth was in fact 1948 rather than 1945. If his year of birth was 1948 it would more likely mean he joined at least 19 or 20 which makes much more sense to me. I really hope this is clarified soon as it would be a shame to get this wrong for him. 79.97.208.89 (talk) 01:26, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Per the TBS Fresh Prince of Bel Air Bio on James Avery 1948 is states as the birth year. http://www.tbs.com/stories/story/0,,115677,00.html But there is a follow-up of where the publists got the date of birth: "Avery was born Nov. 27, 1945, in Virginia. His age was being widely reported as 65 as news of his death spread on Wednesday, but publicist Cynthia Snyder told TODAY that she was reading the correct date of birth from the actor's driver's license." Source: http://www.today.com/entertainment/james-avery-fresh-prince-bel-air-star-dies-68-2D11833026 With this information I believe until the gravestone is seen we won't know the true DOB. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.11.4.125 (talk) 19:19, 8 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

– Clear primary topic. I count 96.3% of pageviews for the actor (2,519 daily), and the DAB page receives more views than any topic that isn't James Avery Artisan Jewelry. The above RM wasn't a very good one; nothing was explicitly cited and the pageviews were skewed due to the fact that the actor had died literally days earlier. Now that it's been 6 years since then, this warrants a revisit. Nohomersryan (talk) 21:41, 16 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Barbara Avery

edit

The language in discussing Barbara Avery's occupation is unclear. It could be interpreted that she was Dean of Students at Loyola Marymount at the time of their marriage in 1988. However, according to her LinkedIn profile, she did not join the school until 1991. [5] 2600:1700:152:3C0:75A4:680:5AB4:FC1 (talk) 03:56, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
