Page moved

edit

I have moved this page to James Stephen Smith as this is his full name per these pages: [1] [2] [3]

This is to avoid confusion with another NHL defenseman also named Steve Smith [4]. He is currently found at Steve Smith (hockey) though I will hopefully find a better name for that page soon as it in no way disambiguates him from the topic of this page. Steve Smith (Philadelphia Flyers/Buffalo Sabres defenseman)GT 08:51, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

My page move stinks, no it basically reads 'James Stephen Stephen Smith'. GoodDay 20:59, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

This article was almost completely devoted to the own goal scored in 1986, which I don't believe was/is fair to Mr. Smith. I mean, he had a pretty good career and I don't think this one unfortunate incident should be the only think you hear about when his name comes up. --Freshfighter9 (talk) 18:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I am moving the page again to Steve Smith (British ice hockey player). Then I will move the other page to Steve Smith (Canadian ice hockey player). Or, actually, no I will not. MTG1989 (talk) 18:36, 24 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Questionable

edit

Despite this infamous incident, he became one of the best defensemen in the league

This is a pretty questionable assertion. Any support for this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.73.73.91 (talk) 05:41, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Requested move

edit

Here's the deal: there are two people by name of "Steve Smith" who have played in the NHL. Both were defencemen, both have Canadian citizenship, both played for multiple teams, and both were born in 1963. The main difference is that this one was born in Scotland. I previously had the page at Steve Smith (British-born ice hockey player), but it was moved to its current name. The current name mentions that he was a defencemen and born in 1963, but these facts do not disambiguate him from the other guy. The previous name was shorter and we should strive to keep it as snappy as possible when we disambiguate. Snocrates 06:32, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Support "defenceman b. 1963" does no disambiguation at all, serving only to lengthen the title. "British-born" is preferable to "Scotland-born" I suppose. –Pomte 11:33, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose COncensus was built at WP:HOckey that this player be disambiguated at Steve Smith (ice hockey) and the other at James Stephen Smith which is his real name. -Djsasso (talk) 19:05, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • The other one is not known by his full name so it is clearly inappropriate. He is known as "Steve Smith". We don't use full names just to disambiguate when they are not known by that name. We use the name the person is known by, plus a disambiguation term, if needed. Incidentally, it would be nice if editors would restrain themselves from moving pages undergoing a formal move proposal. It tends to mess up the links for the proposal. And somehow you've managed to reverse the talk pages for both players--this one belongs to the British-born player! Snocrates 21:41, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
      • I was thinking the same thing when you moved them from the original name to your new name. You should have proposed your move before changing the name in the first place, because your request isn't really to change between yours and Mayumashu's names but to change from the name that the hockey project came up with and your own. There is a Steve Smith disambiguation page so using his real name is not an issue as people who search for Steve Smith will still easily find him. The talk pages are fixed. I am not sure how they got backwards but they are fixed now. -Djsasso (talk) 13:49, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
        • There's nothing that says a move cannot be performed w/o discussion. However, once a formal move proposal is underway a move shouldn't be performed b/c it preempts a formal process. The use of the full name is in issue when it is contrary to WP convention, which it is in this case. Snocrates 21:35, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
          • Actually it is not, convention states that full names should be used before resorting to bracketed disambiguators. This is the reason why we use middle names in article titles prior to resorting to bracketed disambiguators. As to the moves, yes controversial moves should not be made prior to having a discussion, its states as much on the move page. A quick look at this page and the millions of names that it has gone through would indicate that any move is a controversial one. -Djsasso (talk) 21:37, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: The disamibguation page and the {{for}} template make it clear which is the correct article for anyone arriving at the wrong one. --JD554 (talk) 14:14, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: Things are just fine, the way they are. GoodDay (talk) 17:05, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: Using his full name is the cleanest way to disambiguate this particular player. Using "(British-born ice hockey player)" isn't any more intuitive, since he isn't generally known by the place of his birth. This is especially true given that he has Canadian citizenship and has played for Team Canada. The disambiguation page and notes at the top of the articles clear things up for people that end up at the wrong page. -- JamesTeterenko (talk) 17:25, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: cumbersome proposal is not a better disambiguation. Flibirigit (talk) 22:04, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose: Why change something that doesn't need changing. We had a consensus, and it works. Kaiser matias (talk) 02:45, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Confusion over talk pages

edit

See Talk:Steve Smith (ice hockey)#Confusion over talk pages. Andrewa (talk) 23:35, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's there to see? It doesn't exist. GoodDay (talk) 23:48, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just go to Talk:Steve Smith (ice hockey) I forget how to link the sections. Basically it just had to do with the talk pages that were moved incorrectly but are now fixed. -Djsasso (talk) 23:52, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
You need to insert a pound sign "#" to link sections. Flibirigit (talk) 23:54, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can you tell its the end of the day at work? -Djsasso (talk) 23:55, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I typed it incorrectly, and immediately corrected it. It was actually fixed before you made this comment, but presumably after you followed the busted link. Sorry about the confusion; Try again now. Andrewa (talk) 04:35, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page title

edit

Per WP:COMMONNAME, I'm not too sure if the current title is going to work - as a reader, it took unnecessary navigating to get to this page - maybe something Steve Smith (assistant coach) could work? Any other ideas? Connormah (talk) 01:42, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

This has gone through many many many naming discussions. This is the best name anyone can come up with. Things like (assistant coach) don't work because readers wouldn't really know him as that either and would end up doing the same amount of navigation you had to do. In the end almost anyone who does a search is going to end up at the disambiguation page which clearly explains who is who and will get you here. -DJSasso (talk) 10:45, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Who the heck is "James Stephen Smith"? I've never heard of him. Dolovis (talk) 04:01, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I concur. Honestly, if I had typed in Steve Smith and was looking for a hockey player, this would be the guy I'd be looking for. I'd hazard a guess that by scoring on his own net he is more widely known than a player who played 18 NHL games. But if this is consensus, I'll concede to it. Requested Move

edit

Picture this: You need to look up the Steve Smith that scored on his own net against the Calgary Flames in ’86. You look up Steve Smith, but, you didn’t know that his full name was James Stephen Smith, and you get that guy that played for the Sabres, Flyers, and whatnot. Besides, the Smith that scored into his own net is more universally known, but the other Smith shouldn’t be left out. So, I’m proposing a change. Oiler, Flame, Blackhawk defenseman: Steve Smith (ice hockey b. Apr. 30, 1963) Flyer, Sabre defenseman: Steve Smith (ice hockey b. Apr. 4, 1963) Looking up “Steve Smith (ice hockey) would lead you to a fancy disambiguation page with the two Smiths on it. So, what do you say? MTG1989 (talk) 00:54, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

If you look up Steve Smith you get the disambiguation page Steven Smith (disambiguation) which has both players listed. This has been discussed countless times. This is the simplist way to disambiguate. We don't disambiguate by specific days of birth because that is too complicated. Less people are actually likely to know his exact day of birth than his full name. Either way anyone typing Steve Smith into the search gets the disambiguation page with both players listed on it. And for those that happen to get to the wrong page still, there is a hat note at the top telling you where the other Steve Smith page is located. -DJSasso (talk)
Yeah, I guess that makes sense. All right. MTG1989 (talk) 16:43, 28 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Own goal?

edit

This IS the Steve Smith that scored the own goal in the 1986 playoffs, no? This is an extremely notorious moment in hockey history, and the fact it was taken out of the page makes absolutely no sense. The amount of results from numerous media when googling "Steve Smith own goal" is astonishing, and it definitely does a disservice to the page to overlook this moment in history.
