Requested move 12 April 2024
edit- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved to Java, South Ossetia. Clear consensus that the existing title, "Java (town)", is too ambiguous to be suitable. However, some participants raised concerns that the title "Java, Georgia" would give the inaccurate impression that the town is in the US state of Georgia. "Java, South Ossetia" was suggested as an alternate title and appears to address all of the concerns raised about other titles. It was noted that a past page move from 2008 was concerned that "Java, South Ossetia" was a POV title, but participants in the current RM do not appear to have viewed this as a significant concern, so I see "Java, South Ossetia" as having attained consensus. Java (town) → Java, Georgia – Java, New York and Java, South Dakota are also towns and Java, Montana is a ghost town. Yes there is Java District and Java Municipality but these are sub topics of the town and have a longer name. The Commons category already uses the proposed title. It was moved in 2008 from Java, South Ossetia apparently to avoid POV after being moved from the proposed title. - Support. It's not the only town. Egsan Bacon (talk) 00:43, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose the proposed title. The town is claimed by South Ossetia and has never been controlled by Georgia. I'm open to considering alternative names. Alaexis¿question? 12:07, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Based on the proposed title I would immediately assume that the article was about a community in the U.S. state of Georgia, due to the common placename, state form used for most settlements in the state. Something like Java (South Ossetia) makes more sense, but since I don't know the region's geopolitics I'd defer to others regarding the suitability of that clarifier. ╠╣uw [talk] 13:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- I can't find any evidence of a Java in the US state so per WP:SHORTFORM there doesn't appear to be ambiguity per the Oni example. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:14, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't say I oppose it because there's a place in the US state named Java. I oppose it because Java, Georgia is likely to make readers think (wrongly) that it refers to a place in the US state, since that's how we title them. ╠╣uw [talk] 22:50, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes "Placename, Statename" is common usage in the US but that doesn't make it ambiguous or likely to be confused. Leaving aside the US common usage it could be argued that all the places in the US titled "Placename, Georgia" would make readers think they are in the country as the country is likely to be more common in at least some parts of the English speaking world. Interestingly though there doesn't appear to be any cases where there is a place with the same name in both the country and US state. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:24, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

- Support per nom. We use this construction for all places that need disambiguation, not just those in the USA. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:51, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose as I don't think WP:USPLACE applies to non-US places and the fact that WP:USPLACE is a prevalent guideline that one could be confused and think that the town is in the U.S. state of Georgia and not the country of Georgia. Is there a different solution? cookie monster 755 00:04, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Rename somehow. Fine with any of Java, Georgia, Java, South Ossetia, Java (South Ossetia), etc. None of the opposers address the ambiguity of Java (town), which should go to the disambiguation. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:30, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support some move, there is no indication that the Georgian town is the clear primary topic for all towns named "Java". BD2412 T 18:24, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support or move to Java, South Ossetia. The current title is too ambiguous, since there are other towns named Java that are discussed on Wikipedia. — BarrelProof (talk) 08:39, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
