A portrait of Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille
editI would like to suggest a picture to upload:
http://xtronics.com/images/Poiseuille.jpg
Does it suit the article and meet copyright requirements?
Birth year?
editThere seems to be considerable confusion on the internet over whether he was born in 1797 or 1799. I have changed it to 1797 since this seems to have the favour of most of the French websites about him and 1797 seems more likely if he went to University in 1815. Also the cited ref says 1797. But Encyc Brittanica says 1799. Paul Matthews (talk) 17:23, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Leonard or Louis ?
editI have moved the article from Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille to Jean Léonard Marie Poiseuille, based on the following
- According to VIAF, the national libraries of France, Germany and the United States all call him Jean Léonard Marie Poiseuille
- Published biographical accounts by Marcel Brillouin [1] in 1930, Pfitzner [2] in 1976, and Sutera and Skallak [3] in 1993 all have Leonard
- Google Books also (predominantly) uses Jean Léonard Marie Poiseuille for author-name in its index. [4] (though the papers I've looked at appear just to have eg Dr Poiseuille or J.L.M. Poiseuille, so GB may just be following the Library of Congress here).
- The French service Medic@ uses Léonard: [5], [6] (though this may just be following the B.N.F.)
- Poiseuille (Jean-Léonard-Marie) is the name on the register of doctors of the Préfecture du département de la Seine in 1844. (Admitted 13 August 1828) [7]; Poiseuille (Jean-Léonard) is registered in 1854 [8]
- Poiseuille (Jean-Léonard-Marie) appears in the list of the "Promotion de 1815" [9] in Fourcy (1828) Histoire de l'école polytechnique
On the other hand
- Britannica consistently has Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille -- eg 1911, 1926, 1937, 1974, 1983 [10]
- Larousse, Grand dictionnaire universel du 19e siècle (Volume 12) has POISEUILLE (Jean-Louis-Marie) [11]
Overall, on Google Books,
- "Jean Leonard Marie Poiseuille" -wikipedia gets 1,730 hits
- "Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille" -wikipedia gets 966 hits
