The main headings should be Historical background and Halakha on cigarette smoking: late 20th Century. Can somebody make those changes and also wikify better? Thanks HG 17:38, 22 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! HG

Article needs major work

I'm concerned about the following:

1.) How much of the text of this article was copied, verbatim, from this one: [1]

2.) The legitimacy of using the above article as a source (I think not)

3.) The formatting problems that arose from the cutting and the pasting that the perp felt it unnecessary to fix (i.e., the character "?" showing up, here, instead of a character in whatever font was used for the original article)

4.) The "sources" and "references," all naked-like, at the end of just about every paragraph, instead of formatted properly using ref. tags (which happened as a result of #1, above)

5.) The "sources" and "references" being, in many cases, illegible, and are therefore, as my friend Hong used to say, "No good."

I've done some copyediting, as you can see in the history, but I've left things formatted as quotes alone for now, because I don't have time at the moment to fact/quote check. But when I do, and if it looks like a quote comes from the article I linked to, above, I'm leaning strongly toward pulling it -- because of plagiarism and/or because I challenge the legitimacy of the "source."

And finally, please don't forget that this article isn't just for Jewish people, or people who already know about Judaism. Please make sure to italicize words that are not English (and aren't in common use), and write out things like "Rabbi" (instead of "R.").

That's all for now -- but I'll be back.

The article is amazingly one sided. It reads like an anti-smoking pamphlet and only cites poskim that forbid smoking, completely avoiding the huge body of work by people who talked about the benefits of smoking. It doesn't discuss the various halachic debates on the permissibility of smoking on holidays, etc. It just references those that are opposed. It also does not mention the prominent Rabbis who smoke themselves nor the fact that Reform Rabbis generally dismiss halacha as binding. I am marking this as NPOV. 66.87.68.200 (talk) 15:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
