Ethnicity and religion
editi am WP:BLPCAT states that the person must self-identify as being of the religion for us to include the category in our article. I interpret that to mean we need a WP:RS that states she self-identifies as being of the Jewish religion. The material about her ethnicity is presently sourced to www.asiansofmixedrace.com and MySpace and Formspring.me, which do not look like reliable sources to me. It seems to me that race and religious orientation are irrelevant to her career as a singer-songwriter. My opinion is that not only should the categories be removed, but the sentences about ethnicity and religion should be removed from the body of the article as well. -- Dianna (talk) 20:07, 29 January 2013 (UTC) Another guideline to consider is WP:DEFINING, which calls for us to categorise using the most relevant categories and the ones that are most frequently seen in reliable secondary sources. We're just not seeing that kind of support in the sources for the information and categories regarding ethnicity and religion for this musician. It supports my contention that any material and categories not repeatedly mentioned by reliable secondary sources should be removed. -- Dianna (talk) 20:28, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
- Agree. There is nothing in the article text to confirm that the subject identifies as being Jewish – something that the "Jews in the African diaspora" category implies. I will remove the category unless a compelling counterargument is forthcoming. GFHandel ♬ 20:53, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
- Disagree. First of all, those aren't the only sites that were used for the information about her ethnic background (ethnicelebs and tumblr were also used). Also, she doesn't have to "identify" as being Jewish to qualify as being Jewish. Jewish is also an ethnicity which is all that was being claimed about her in this case, and if she's of Jewish and African-American ancestry, she qualifies for the "Jews in the African diaspora" category. What she would not qualify for is "African-American Jews" because she doesn't practice Judaism. -- And we drown (talk) 23:44, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
- Part of my rationale for removal was that her ethnicity has no impact on her career as a musician as per WP:DEFINING. Are her songs especially Jewish in nature? Does her Jewish heritage impact her career? What about the other ethnicities? I'm not seeing any claims to this effect in the sources. -- Dianna (talk) 00:02, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Does being Jewish or African-American or Japanese American have any impact on being an actor or musician or model? Not inherently, at least not necessarily, no, though of course people can face discrimination because of their ethnic background, etc. But then why do we have categories like Jewish American actors or African-American film actresses or American pornographic film actors of Native Hawaiian descent? I think you're being too conservative with WP:DEFINING here. If Jhené Aiko can't be listed as Japanese or Jewish or Navajo because they're somehow "not important" according to you, then we'd need to remove the same kinds of ethnic categories and ethnic biographical information from everyone from Ronald Reagan to Langston Hughes, from Utada Hikaru to Tyson Beckford, from Lauren Bacall to Noam Chomsky. Look for example at this category, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_people_of_Choctaw_descent) which happens to apply to Jhené and her sister. It doesn't say that the person's Choctaw ancestry has to have impacted their career or defined their work or notability in any way, they simply have to have Choctaw heritage. -- And we drown (talk) 19:27, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
- I guess it may be because I don't live in a country where race is a big deal, but yeah, personally I would like to see these irrelevant racial and ethnic categories removed from lots of articles. I think it's over the top, for example, to place this woman in Category:Jews in the African diaspora when she is an American citizen born in Los Angeles. -- Dianna (talk) 00:12, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's not a question of race being a big deal or not (and race has been a big deal in every country at some point or another, just look at all of the genocides and nationalism in world history). It's part of who someone is, it's a fact, whether we care about it or not, and it does define people to some extent. And she belongs in Category:Jews in the African diaspora because she is of Jewish and African descent, but doesn't practice Judaism, like many others in the category. Where she was born or what country she is a citizen of is irrelevant to the category. If she practiced Judaism she would belong in the sub-category Category:African-American Jews. -- And we drown (talk) 02:13, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- the category "Jews in the African diaspora" refers specifically to black Jews from Africa, indeed from specific parts of Africa, according to History of the Jews in the African diaspora. Does she truly fit that category? Or is she merely a person who happens to have some ancestors who are black and some who are Jewish? -- Dianna (talk) 03:04, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- It doesn't specifically say Black Jews from Africa (look at Drake, Lenny Kravitz, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Langston Hughes, Jada Pinkett Smith, and the subcategory Category:African-American Jews) (Key word American), and besides, she is of Black African descent. Perhaps the category needs to be less vaguely defined? -- And we drown (talk) 03:45, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- If the category is vaguely defined, and you're not sure what it means, perhaps it's time to stop adding it to articles. -- Dianna (talk) 04:11, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

School
editIt looks somewhat unprofessional to say she is focusing on "school." It should say which school she is attending, if someone can find out, or at the very least what level of schooling (high school, college, or grad school). --Bobjohnson111980 (talk) 22:53, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
