Because Scarpa's in-ring persona had attracted criticism (including mention in his New York Times obituary that Scarpa's act was a sort of ethnic caricature) and because it would be, in my opinion, a disservice to readers not to mention the ire aroused by Scarpa's decision to don Native American costume and "play Indian" in the ring, I added a sentence about this widespread criticism of Scarpa. This sentence and its numerous citations were deleted by an editor who considered the addition to be a "tangent." The criticism is directed toward the main features of Scarpa's in-ring persona. It's difficult for me to consider it a tangent . . . unless the editor was thinking that it was inappropriate to focus on "the frame," so to speak, and not the painting. I've drawn an analogy from the world of art to explore what I think might be the viewpoint that considers including widespread criticism of Scarpa's ethnic caricature as a "tangent." And, yet, the "frame" was chosen Scarpa. It was central to the effect Scarpa produced. In this case, if we consider the ethnic caricature as a "frame" for his wrestling, we have to likewise acknowledge that this frame effectively transformed the entirety of the "painting." It is also possible that the editor considered mention of Scarpa's critics as inappropriate for practical reasons, i.e. it's not conducive to societal well-being to focus on topics such as racism. This might explain the editor's claim that this formed a unnecessary tangent. And, yet, even if I agree with the claim that a focus on such topics as racism is a drag on society, it is a value judgment that had best not enter in the decision of what information to include or exclude. The fact is that many commentators have considered Scarpa's in-ring persona as an exercise in ethnic caricature. It might be working against the betterment of society for such criticisms to be leveled, but they have been leveled. And an encyclopedia article had best mention this fact.Drew.viles (talk) 18:55, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

The article mentions a match where Scarpa was attacked by Lou Albano (kayfabe) while Scarpa was wrestling Mike Conrad - in reality, the match was against Albano protege Mike (Dennis) McCord, who went on to wrestle in the South as Austin Idol. I saw the match on TV. It was on the old WWWF program "All Star Wrestling" in early 1974. Scarpa was cut on the forehead in the "attack", but was definitely not "vomiting blood" or bleeding from the mouth; only his forehead. Scarpa was bloodied many times on TV back then. I would have to say that he bled more often on TV than any other WWWF wrestler of that era (proof would be by looking at his forehead - it looked like a topographical road map).74.97.183.53 (talk) 17:58, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Joseph Scarpa, best known as WWE Hall of Famer Chief Jay Strongbow, has passed away.

Stongbow was a longtime wrestler who competed from 1947-1985, a career spanning almost four decades. He was a two time WWE tag champion who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994 and worked as an agent for the company in the 90s. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.100.49.32 (talk) 23:53, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Every news report mentions the source being a Twitter post by Jim Ross, but that tweet has been deleted. Until a new source comes forward, I think this page should be reverted. After talking to someone, they sourced the news to his family. Sorry to hear it's confirmed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.79.56.120 (talk) 21:40, 4 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
