These two John Popes are now unscrambled. From my book “The Remembrance of the Pope Families.” Marie Day Mimbs

John Pope born 27 Sept. 1749, died in Augusta Georgia 31 Jan. 1795. He was the youngest son of Worden Pope and Hester Netherton.

Worden Pope b abt 1695, son of Nathaniel Pope, alias Bridges and Jane Brown, daughter of Original Brown and wife Jane. Worden Pope was named after friend, Dr. John Worden, friend of Nathaniel and Jane Pope, whose Will was signed 1-17-1714 P 10-31-1716. He named Worden Pope, his Godson, and left him one half of his estate. He left the other half to Nathaniel and Jane Pope and Joseph Weeks. Worden Pope married Hester Netherton, who was the daughter of Henry Netherton and Sarah Tucker. Worden died 1749, abst. Of Will dated 1-14-1748, P Aug. 19, 1749, names his children. He left to his wife Hester one half, to his children Benjamin, Jean, William and “the child my wife is carrying.” His executor was Augusta Washington, and Benjamin Weeks. They lived in Louisa and Prince William County, Va. Three of their children left Virginia for Kentucky in the early 1779. William and Benjamin left to seek their fortunes in Kentucky. After the death of Worden Pope, Hester married Lynaugh Helm and the “child she was carrying” was John Pope, whom they raised in Prince William Co. Virginia.

          1. Dr. John Henry Pope born Va. 7 May, 1749, died 14 Aug., 1802 Wilkes Co., Georgia. married first Lucy DuVal daughter of Samuel DuVal and Lucy Clairbourn. He married 2nd Margaret Hunter. The Richmond County Newspaper VGGA, Sept. 1802 page 3, reported Dr. John Pope  died at his plantation in Wilkes County Ga. On Sat. The 14th Inst. (Ult.) Late of Dumfries Virginia, leaving a wife and five children. VGGA Sept 1802, pg 3. death stated in article by son Dr. William H. Pope C1-1-28-1836 Newspaper Source. He married Margaret Hunter Jan 8. 1787. Margaret Hunter b.1-8-1757, d. 1836 married Jan. 8, 1787.  Margaret Hunter was the daughter of Dr. John Hunter of Huntington Co., Ayr, Scotland and Elizabeth Chapman d. 1-16-1764. 

John Hunter was a Vestryman of Fairfax Parish, Christ Church, Va. “The Chapman Family;” John Pope married and lived in Dumfries Virginia according to his obituary in the newspaper. The children on the 1850 census of Wilkes County, Georgia state they were born in Virginia. I believe they relocated about 1790 to Georgia after the birth of the older children. John Henry Pope Jr. and Alexander Pope were born in Virginia. William Henry Pope was born in Georgia. A newspaper notice of the death of Margaret Hunter Pope states she died 1836 at the age of 70, which states it correctly as she was born 1757. Dr. John Henry Pope died Saturday 19, August, 1802,Wilkes Co., Ga. estate records Wilkes Co. Ga. Inventory and administration. Inventory appraisement 1805 page 239. Margaret Pope, adm, bond Aug. 3, 1802, John H. Pope, administrator of sale Dec. 15, 1804 page 80. Since John Grimes and his daughter Lucy and other family members relocated to Wilkes County from Virginia, I presume this to be a brother of Lucy Grimes whose father was Philip Grimes. Her sister Susannah married Nathaniel Burrell of the Grove. Dr. John H. Pope’s wife, Margaret, and his son, Dr. John H. Pope, were the adm. of his estate in Wilkes Co., Ga. Margaret Pope as adm. received an adm. bond Aug. 3, 1802, John H. Pope as adm. of sale, Dec 15, 1805, debts March 2, 1805. His will was burned, as well as many others, when the lawyer, who took some of the old Wills home to record in a book. The attorney’s home caught fire and all were burned. Consequently only some of the estate records and inventories of these persons remain. Only part of the settlement remains. Margaret Hunter Pope born in 1757 died Washington Co., Ga. Her OB states Margaret Pope, widow of late John Pope died 18 Jan., 1836 at the age of 79 yrs. List of debts due at the death of Dr. John Hunter Pope included: His brother-in-law, Gen. John Chapman Hunter, married Sarah Dade Tripplett. He was in VA Legislature. Brother of Margaret Hunter Pope. . One bond in Kentucky for conveyance of 200 acres in Jefferson Co., Va. to Benjamin Pope: this bond was his nephew Benjamin, son of Wardon, Wordon and Hester Pope, of Nathaniel and Jane Brown Pope. Jan. 29, 1795. Jane Brown’s half sister Mary was mar. to James Triplet. Will of Campbell above.
