Hello User:jytdog, your COIN link is broken, here is the archived version.[1] Editor Candice aka User:CandiceTHOPP is an employee of the BLP this article is about. She is in need of some guidance, can you help hand-hold her into a deeper understanding of the ways of the wikiverse? IRC transcript below, nicks adjusted to reflect her wikipedia-username:
conversation with Candice about where to find a 'talkpage', how to look in the 'edit-history', and the beginnings of and understanding of WP:RS and WP:V.
(CandiceTHOPP has joined)
CandiceTHOPP: Good day
user75108: hello CandiceTHOPP, how can we help you?
CandiceTHOPP: I need to update the Jose Baselga page I do not understand anything on this page and every single edit I make gets rejected.
user75108: okay, let me peek at the page history...
CandiceTHOPP: I just started working here and my first project was to update Jose Baselga's page. which I thought would be quite easy and its not
user75108: are you CandiceTHOPP, CandiceTHOPP? (your wikipedia username, I mean)
CandiceTHOPP: is there anyway to send someone all the info I provided that was deleted and someone please help me with this I am desperate to keep my job and just.... YESSSS that's me
user75108: ok, no prob. I can help you.
CandiceTHOPP: Thank God
user75108:  :-)
CandiceTHOPP: I feel so defeated
user75108: first thing, look at the top of the page, there is a button that says history.
CandiceTHOPP: Thanky ou so much
+Dragonfly6-7: CandiceTHOPP - incidentally, if your job depends on this, that's absolutely not fair. !link Jose Baselga -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_Baselga
CandiceTHOPP: It isn't fair but.....
user75108: (she's just adding without sources -- I don't think she knows about talkpages)
CandiceTHOPP: I do not
user75108: (jytdog is trying to reply to her but she's never seeing it)
+Dragonfly6-7: the important thing is to use sources. Otherwise, how do we know that you're not just pulling this out of your ass.
CandiceTHOPP: its so much info on all the pages im dizzy
+Dragonfly6-7: I mean, I'm sure you're telling the truth, but it sets a really bad precedent if we just accept it based on your say-so. d'you understand? why it's important to include sources?
CandiceTHOPP: I do not know what I am doing I will admit that without hesitation however I need to update his profile
user75108: usually, when you are the person the page is about (or their exec asst), here is what you do
CandiceTHOPP: I am pulling the information from his Biosketch and MSKCC webpage
user75108: instead of editing the page, edit the talkpage -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jose_Baselga
user75108: you click on the "talk" button at the top of the article to get there, then click "new section", type out what you think needs to be added, or changed, or whatever, then click save.
user75108: somebody else -- myself or dragonfly or jytdog or whatnot -- will look over your suggestions, and fix up the article (or discuss with you why the changes cannot be made -- such as if they are unsourced) make sense?
CandiceTHOPP: I get your point however I am not here to make things up or plagiarize I just want to update the profile to look like a professional profile similar to the Charles Sawyers page
+Dragonfly6-7: !link Charles Sawyers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Sawyers , Candice - you realize there's a warning note at the top of the article about Dr Sawyers, yes?
+Dragonfly6-7: "This biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources. Contentious material about living persons that is
+Dragonfly6-7: unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful."
CandiceTHOPP: Dragonfly 6-7 I did nothing to Charles Sawyers page I looked at it to get a general idea as to what a general profile should look like
user75108: Candice, wikipedia is a bit weird. As the exec asst to Sawyers, you are the #2 most qualified person to write the article (#1 being Sawyers)
user75108: but as you can imagine, people have a hard time staying objective -- they want to write a glowing resume, not a just-the-facts encyclopedia article
user75108: so we try to have some guidelines: reflect what the sources say, don't edit your own (or your boss's) wikipage directly but use the talk page, and so on
user75108: does this make sense? what the other pages look like, is not as important as what the sources say.
user75108: sources being: newspapers, governmental websites, teevee, academic/scientific/medical journals, and SOME websites (but not blogs/facebook/homepages/twitter/youtube/etc)
+Dragonfly6-7: CandiceTHOPP - the page about Dr Sawyers isn't necessarily the best model to emulate.
user75108: not because it's a bad page, but because the page on Jose Baselga should summarize what the newspapers/teevee/magazines/academia/etc sources said *about Baselga*.
CandiceTHOPP: All I want to submit is the facts I am unbiased I really dont care to gloat on someone elses behalf I am a neutral party who received by far the most absurd task for this job
CandiceTHOPP: I really thought Public Affairs department would do this and they said "we dont"
user75108: public affairs is correct! they are inherently biased, whereas you are less biased, and myself, having never heard of Baselga, am 100% unbiased.
CandiceTHOPP: ok where is this "talk page" do I search Jose Baselga and look for "talk" on the top right side of the web page
user75108: so Candice, have you visited the article talkpage -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jose_Baselga
CandiceTHOPP: I just heard of him 3 weeks ago before being hired
user75108: you can see that jytdog left a message there. leave a message there, and introduce yourself, and ask for their help.
CandiceTHOPP: All the edits I made was deleted
CandiceTHOPP: Could I ask Jytdog to put them back , on the suggestion page?
+Dragonfly6-7: yes, you could , but you have to supply your sources
CandiceTHOPP: Or would I really have to type it all back out again
user75108: the reason jytdog removed your edits, was because they did not specify a source (you can see that in the edit history)
+Dragonfly6-7: you have to supply your sources, Candice. you have to say where the information came from
user75108: and yes, the point of the talkpage is for your and jytdog to come to an agreement (aka consensus) on what the page ought to say
CandiceTHOPP: I am pulling the information from the doctor's Biosketch a resume in the non medical world. so how should I cite those?
CandiceTHOPP: ok I will start again I saved the talk page on my favorite bar thanky ou all for your help im sure I will be back
user75108: Sure candice, come back if you have questions, and post your suggestions to that talkpage, jytdog may get you set up
CandiceTHOPP: will do thank you so much you guys are great.
As you can see, she is willing to learn, but has a long way to go before she is a proficient wikipedian. Please ping my usertalk if you would like me to handle some portion of this teachable moment. Also ping User:Dragonfly67 since they are being quoted in the IRC traffic above. One immediate concern is her saying she is "pulling from his BioSketch" profile, which makes me think copyvio might be a problem, though I don't know what 'biosketch' actually is (maybe it is a Sloan Kettering thing). In any case, jytdog, I'll let you lead the parade here, if you like. I note that the PR office at Sloan Kettering flatly refuses to edit wikipedia themselves, which is a good sign; now we just need to close the deal, and get a good set of procedures worked out with Candice, and then she can help their other people learn the ropes. 75.108.94.227 (talk) 19:13, 20 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I have been talking with her at her Talk page. I also fixed the link above. Jytdog (talk) 19:20, 20 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I went there to tell her about this, and saw you there. It looks like things are going along swimmingly, I gave her some pointers on how to verify the awards-list, some of them are obviously wp:noteworthy once properly sourced. Feel free to ping me if you two need anything, but for now I'll bow out, I don't really know anything about Sloan Kettering except that it must be a hospital or something.  :-)     75.108.94.227 (talk) 19:45, 20 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

HI Candice. Thanks for using the edit request function. First, the breastcancer.org cite is not useful - they just post pretty much whatever you give them, so that is WP:SPS. Especially for things like awards, what we look for are independent sources that say something about the award. By "indpendent" I mean not coming from the recipient or the giver, but a third party, like a newspaper (you have to be careful with this, as if there was a press release, many sites post them - press releases are not independent. Also, please take some time to learn how to format citations -- see WP:Citing sources for instructions on how to do that. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 14:56, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Improving the article

edit

I've been working on improving, updating, and expanding this article in my sandbox. The current article is rather sparse, so I researched and added more content about his specific scientific work. Can someone take a look and let me know if these are good additions to the article?--FacultiesIntact (talk) 23:42, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I went ahead and outlined the changes more specifically below:

  • Removed the hyphens from Memorial Sloan Kettering
  • Added "Scientific accomplishments" section covering his work on Anti-EGFR, HER2-positive breast cancer, and PI3K Pathway Inhibitors, with references to support content
  • Expanded "Honors and Awards" to be more comprehensive
  • Added "Other experience and professional memberships" section

--FacultiesIntact (talk) 00:10, 2 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

The content in the scientific research section was writing a mini-review from his research papers, which we don't do here. It also contained OR, PROMO and content that violated WP:PRIMARY by 'commenting' on the sources. I am referring to passages like Baselga was instrumental in establishing the clinical efficacy of EGFR-inhibitors as anti-cancer therapy, The discovery resulted in clinical trials of this combination therapy to treat HER2-positive breast cancer., Knowing this, the Baselga laboratory contributed to the identification of a number of molecular pathways, and ...Baselga’s focus has shifted to include investigations of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway in breast cancer.... I have removed this junk. Jytdog (talk) 08:55, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
