High chief name

edit

This has been brought up before via edit summaries, but needs discussion since it keeps being reintroduced into the lead. Per WP:TITLESINTITLES, Parker's high chief name should not be included—the best place for it is lower down in the Personal life section. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 20:04, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I disagree, Matai titles are commonly used along with their first and last names (eg. The Samoan Prime Minster, Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi). Parker also represents it, with it being announced in majority of his fights. I believe it's an important privilege in the Samoan community, therefore it should stay. Kidsoljah (talk) 08:21, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK, fair point. Regarding his Samoan heritage, however, I'm seeing a lot of slow edit-warring over whether to include it in the lead. I'm not fussed either way, but at MOS:BLPLEAD it says: "Ethnicity ... should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability." Since ring announcers always emphasise his high chief name and therefore make a big deal out of his heritage, would it not be acceptable in this case to include "... of Samoan descent"? We don't do it for everyone, but Parker seems to really strongly identify with that part of himself. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 19:06, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I get where you're coming from. A lot of boxers are of different decent and represent other countries (eg. Anthony Joshua is Nigerian). You have a fair point but it's not done with other boxing athletes. I personally think it shouldn't be shown, but don't mind if it is. Although the Matai title story is a bit different. 122.60.178.131 (talk) 07:40, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
The Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi example is different because that is his WP:COMMONNAME but it is not for Parker so WP:TITLESINTITLES applies. 80.235.147.186 (talk) 20:43, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

So do we need an RfC on the Samoan heritage part? The IP edits adding it in are pretty relentless now. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 22:55, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Had to go the WP:PP route in the meantime. If you (nobody in particular, but anyone who feels one way or the other on this issue) want any leg to stand on, I suggest to get in here and offer some comment—I'm not in the mood to go running to WP:RPP every time the content gets added back. Fact is, Parker's Samoan heritage is a big deal in the whole presentation of his career, so what's the problem with including it in the lead section? As such, I don't even disagree with the IPs adding it, but what is bugging me is their reluctance to discuss it here. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 08:14, 1 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

"Contrary to reports that the emerging star was bestowed a matai (chief) title, the village of Faleula revealed to him the name to bestow upon him the chiefly title of La'auli" - what the hell does this even mean? It's almost pure nonsense - Xorkl000 (talk) 22:08, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Amateur career

edit
  • But it was not until he was ten years old when he joined the Papatoetoe Boxing Club to pursue and learn more about the sport. This seems to missing something or is grammatically incorrect.
  • He was trained by Grant Arkell and former great, Manny Santos Former great seems a bit WP:PEACOCKY.
  • He is the middle child, being one of three children. Bit redundant with the next sentence
  • Parker also comes from a religious family, belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Need a citation for a statement on someones religion
  • Parker started traveling around the world at sixteen years of age. Do you mean boxing internationally?
  • It was not until he prepared for the AIBA Youth World Championships in Azerbaijan Is there supposed to be more to this sentence?
  • Parker's first major event. Another part sentence
  • Unfortunately he had to attend by himself because of affordability, but was looked after by the Australian National Team Management as his coach Grant Arkell could not afford to accompany him. "Attend by himself because of affordability" and "as his coach Grant Arkell could not afford to accompany him" in the same sentence.
  • He was also to be... Grammer
  • In the end it was the Croatian who managed to gain the upper hand in the final round and push ahead to an 8:6 victory, as Parker left the ring nursing an injured nose but successfully winning bronze. Parker left in during the final round?
  • Followed by the semifinals against Jake Ageidu. What happened in the semifinal?
  • He then met Emile Gineste from Tahiti, in his final. Shouldn't it be "the Final"?

Professional career

edit
  • The then twenty-year-old stepped into the professional ranks for the first time, Parker was hyped as New Zealand's most promising boxer since David Tua and had a lot to lose going into his professional debut Grammar and repetition with the opening sentence.
  • Parker was favourite to win and expected to add another win to his professional record More repition and grammer issues.
  • Controversy occurred,... What controversy.
  • He defeated Botha in June 2013 by a second round stoppage Did Williams or Parker defeated Botha in June 2013?

I am finding a lot of grammar problems, repetition and other prose problems. I am going to stop commenting here (second paragraph of career beginings - I haven't looked at the lead yet). I think this needs a good copyedit before i continue. AIRcorn (talk) 10:14, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Response

edit

@Bennyaha: It has been a month now and am not seeing any activity at the article or here. Unfortunately I will probably have to fail this if I don't get a response soon. AIRcorn (talk) 22:56, 26 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Aircorn: I hate seeing these kinds of situations; is this all that needs to be addressed? If so, give me a couple of days (or hours, we'll see how motivated I am...) and I may be able to take care of this. --Bcschneider53 (talk) 03:09, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
It appears much of the article still needs to be reviewed. I've fixed everything so far, but I'm not a boxing expert, so if more serious issues arise, this may be better of being archived and re-nominated later. --Bcschneider53 (talk) 03:41, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Bcschneider53: Yeah I got to that point and realised someone needs to do a pretty thorough copyedit. Didn't see the point in continuing until that was done s it would likely change some of the content. I had left a comment to that effect, but accidentally deleted it when I added this section. Unless you are keen to do this it is probably best I fail this for now (it has been a month and until you showed up the activity at the article is minimal. I will give Benny a week to respond first though. AIRcorn (talk) 09:08, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't have time to give it the thorough copy-edit it needs. It's probably best to fail it for now unless the original nominator responds. --Bcschneider53 (talk) 11:35, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Failing Articles should really be copy edited before nominating. I have allowed a more than reasonable time since mentioning this. Even if it was copy edited now I would still have most of the review to complete and this would stretch things out even further. WP:Deadline, but there are other things I wish to do and I see no reason to keep this open any longer. Anyone can feel free to nominate it when they are confient it is closer to the criteria. Article needs a good clean and better order

edit

This article is beginning to bug me a little. It's seems all jumbled.. Every fight he has had since winning the WBO title, has seen a new sub-header 1 added. at this rate, the contents page is going to be too long. I volunteer to sort out the headings on this page. Also there is no order on the actual fights, what happened in his Fury fight. I have collated articles and will look to sort out this page. Anyone viewing this article, currently doesn't know where to look. I'm looking to simplifying it all. Kind of like how I've done Deontay Wilder. Putting simple titles of who he has fought. Any one have any issues with me doing so, speak now. If there is no reply to my post in a few days, I will make the necessary edits. Thank You. --Mahussain06 (talk) 11:27, 7 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Please go right ahead—the Professional career section is (or was) desperately in need of condensing. Not every single fight needs a large paragraph detailing every punch thrown. It's mucho crufty. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 17:52, 7 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done a good edit now.. I will continue a bit more later on today around his next fight. But I believe the way I have set it now, it should remain this way going forward. Makes it easier to understand what is where.Mahussain06 (talk) 11:53, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Agree it needs fixing but is there a need for every fight to have it’s own section? I believe it would look better with a section covering every three to five fights. Otherwise it’s eventually going to get to cluttered. The ‘Early career’ section is a good example of what I would rather it be like. The only exemption would be if the fight itself had its own article, then a section could cover that fight only. I hope I’ve made sense here. Cheers Kidsoljah (talk) 23:57, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I do understand what you have said. Have a look at how I've ordered Deontay Wilder for example. His championship fights all fall under the WBC title banner. Do you like the layout? If he loses, the title, we start a 'regaining composure'.. If it's not a meaningful fight, then it doesn't need it's own header. At this rate, I'd rather have more order instead of having too many headers. Mahussain06 (talk) 12:15, 11 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Lock page

edit

Can this be done until after the fight? it's getting a bit ridiculous. --Mahussain06 (talk) 08:10, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

You can try for it at WP:RPP, but I'm quite sure they'll say there hasn't been enough recent disruptive editing. I mentioned this before at Talk:Anthony Joshua before the Takam fight. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 23:50, 26 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in Joseph Parker (boxer)

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Joseph Parker (boxer)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "WBN":

  • From Anthony Joshua: Jay, Phil (5 January 2020). "Joshua vs Klitschko UK PPV record". World Boxing News. Archived from the original on 22 February 2020. Retrieved 10 January 2020.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 12:38, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Morecambe

edit

Parker is often seen in and around Morecambe notable for being the home of other boxers Tyson Fury and Isaac Lowe

Instagram post by Parker with Morecambe in the background : https://www.instagram.com/p/CrJZxjFLK0-/ 78.146.233.124 (talk) 12:14, 24 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not really a necessary thing to add unfortunately. If there was some notability surrounding his frequenting of Morecambe (he donates to a charity or service in the town, he takes part in soup kitchens, etc.) then that'd be fair enough, but if he's just often seen there it's not massively useful to the page.
