Kermit on Muppet babies

Should we add a section to the article providing information on Kermit's character in Muppet babies? Eatspie (talk) 21:34, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Old discussion bits

I don't think Kermit spoke at Henson's funeral. Steve Whitmire was not officially named as Henson's successor for Kermit until MUCH later, and his first appearance performing Kermit was in the special the Muppet did remembering Jim Henson. Can anyone give a cite for Kermit speaking at Henson's funeral (outside of a video retrospective or something of the sort)? I think whoever added that info is confusing Edgar Bergen's funeral with Henson's -- since Henson and Kermit did speak at that funeral. -prnyouth

I like Kermit the frog pictures. I don't have clue what he said. Or how he said it Kermit Just looks kool

I thought Brian Henson voiced Kermit now. The Jim Henson page lists someone else. Anyone certain of this? Did Kermit make any appearances before Sesame Street? -rmhermen

Yes, he did. I saw him on an old Ed Sullivan Show rerun. That crazy frog was on drugs or something. I don't know specifics, though. --Stephen Gilbert

Brian Henson as Kermit is just a popular misconception. Steve Whitmire has taken over Kermit (and Ernie). Other lesser Henson-voiced characters are done by others, or have been retired (as happened to Scooter when his voice died of AIDS).

Kermit was the name (and recognizably the form, if somewhat different) of one of the character's in Sam and Friends -- he's been around in one way or another almost since Jim Henson starting abusing fabric on a professional basis. --Paul Drye

Kermit the Frog was started as a link from Kermit (not the frog). How come it took this before people start creating the Kermit and Henson articles?

The universe is a big place and we have little brushes --Paul Drye

Again, the specter of copyright violation rears its ugly head.  :( As much as we love the picture of Kermit the Frog in his entry, I'm about 99% positive that it is *very* copyrighted. It should most likely be removed. Modemac

Copyright shouldn't be a problem here--it's quite clearly fair use. Trademark shouldn't apply here either. If it makes you happier, I'll replace this photo with one of my own stuffed Kermit so we won't have any issue with the copoyright on the original photo. --LDC

It's not about making me happy...it's the fact that Kermit is licensed by Disney these days. And Disney is notorious for protecting its images, as anyone who follows the history of that company will tell you. (They even threatened to sue an elementary school that had Mickey Mouse painted on the wall. I wish I was kidding.) Modemac

That is justified. It is as if Mickey was supporting the school. However in the context of a history and description of the character, this is justified. -- user:zanimum

I want to say that Lena Horne sang "t's Not Easy Being Green" with Kermit, I am going to have to dive into the record collection for this.

She did, I think I have that episode of the Muppet Show

He returned to the Sesame Street newscasts in 2001.

Any relation to Kermit Jagger from the joke, do you think? -- JP Godfrey 17:34, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Kermit was on the Daily Show on May 31, 2004 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.143.229.87 (talkcontribs) .

Kermit was on the re-pilot episode of Family Guy, September 10, 2006. Zchris87v 03:49, 12 September 2006 (UTC) -edit- Also on the following weeks' episode. Zchris87v 02:38, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Kermit's namesake

It should be noted that Kermit the Frog was named after Purdue philosophy professor Theodore Kermit Scott, a childhood friend of Jim Henson.

"The famous Muppet character, Kermit the Frog, was named for a professor of philosophy at Purdue University. Theodore Kermit Scott grew up in Leland, Miss., with Muppet creator Jim Henson, who borrowed Scott's middle name for his most famous creation." http://www.purdue.edu/UNS/pridepoints/970321.Points.pride.html Jason L 04:12, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

What is that around Kermit's neck?

Is that a part of frog anatomy? Or something he wears? Tpellman 00:37, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

It's his collar. I have a vague memory that in some ep he removes it. DMacks 19:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

sadkermit.com i saw a pretty funny video of kermit doing the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt, and then went to the site mentioned in the video and found like 4 other songs. im just curious if anyone knows if thats steve whitmire or some other person doing kermits voice.

SadKermit

I've added information about this as it's verifiable and relevant. It's certainly NOT vandalism. exolon 23:25, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Video is unlicensed, does not represent the character, and obviously a parody. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia of facts. Not a dumping ground for fan made videos. —scarecroe 23:32, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
We include information about parodies on many other articles. The video exists (fact), has a website devoted to it (fact) and represents the character (character is both named 'Kermit' and resembles him - most likely a licensed replica Kermit was used in the video), all of which makes it relevant to the article. exolon 23:39, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
You've included the information under the Trivia section, however this video has nothing to do with subect of the article. It's a parody of the character, and should be categorized as such. —scarecroe 23:41, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Feel free to move it to a "parody" section. By the way the video might be "fan made" but according to YouTube it's stats are :- Views: 940,292, Comments: 1080, Favorited: 6607 times so it's obviously being taken notice of.exolon 23:45, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm not impressed. Wikipedia is not for peddling fan made videos. —scarecroe 00:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm getting tired of your insinuations and attacks. So far you've called me a vandal, suggested that my "discretion" and "judgement" are lacking, and now you're suggesting I'm "peddling" something. I have nothing to do with the creation of the video, neither have I any affiliation with sadkermit.com. exolon 00:09, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Read above and on our respective talk pages: you haven't been attacked by me. Your addition of Kermit masturbating sure looked like vandalism to me, hence my reaction. You've explained that you did not intend the addition as such, but your insistence on its remaining here has been pretty adamant, and your touting the fan video's page hits implies your support (peddling) of this nonsense. —scarecroe 00:33, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Phrases like "Your edits appear to be vandalism", "Your addition to Kermit the Frog is ridiculous", "use more discretion", "use better judgement" sure sound like personal attacks to me. exolon 00:52, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Parodies

Do we really need full plot summaries for them? Seems kinda ad-like, or at least drifting far off-topic for the page at hand. DMacks 16:19, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

I think we need to only include those parodies that have reliable sources for them, or are from well known sources. "Sad Kermit" has been mentioned in at least two major newspapers, and the "Family Guy" parodies qualify as they're from a major TV series so they both qualify. I will attempt to dig out sources for the others later. If anyone can add good sources for the others notability, so much the better. exolon 18:43, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Just because a YouTube video also has a domain name doesn't make it reliable. If you include your favorite, you have to include all the others as well.
???? I said SadKermit qualifies as two major newspapers have done articles on it, not that it was notable due to having a domain. And no, we don't include every minor one - everything has to meet WP:VERIFY. SadKermit qualifies due to it's references, and the Family Guy parodies qualify due to the fact that it's a notable tv series. exolon 03:45, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
This page is pretty ridiculous now. How do we get an admin to evalute this nonsense? I nominate the entire section for removal on the grounds that it has nothing to do with anything. —scarecroe 02:28, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Don't need to involve admins if we lowly editors are working towards resolving it. Are we heading for something of a WP:CONSENSUS to remove them? I could see keeping the intro paragraph (often parodied due to recognizeablity) since that itself seems encyc and on-topic. But all the rest are just examples of that. DMacks 04:12, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Surely, the fact that Kermit is often parodied is relevant to the article, I agree. But as you said, such detail is way overboard and just isn't notable anymore. I would say something like, "Due to his popularity (etc)... examples include several references on Family Guy, dozens of fan-made videos, vomitting Kermit from Late Night with Conan O'Brien, MAD Magazine, Saturday Night Live and comic strips such as Mother Goose and Grimm and Off the Mark." Any specifics therein is just not needed. —scarecroe 06:12, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

I just dropped most of the references, leaving Family Guy and Sad Kermit. I also left in Meet the Feebles, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know if it's accurate.--SarekOfVulcan 17:00, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

  • I've put SadKermit back in (removed by —scarecroe). This has become notable enough for the following major publications to publish articles about it.
  1. The Victoria Times-Colonist, a British Columbia newspaper with a circulation of 72,0000
  2. The Chicago Sun-Times, a USA city newspaper with a circulation of 368,000
  3. The London Free Press, a Canadian newpaper with a circulation of 115,000

There are also lesser citations. If three major newspapers have written articles about this, it's notable. exolon 20:44, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

I removed sadkermit on the basis of the discussion here and edit summaries made by SarekOfVulcan. We've been over this before on this talk page: you can cite as many links as you want, there's still nothing notable about that youtube video in direct relation to the Muppet character. —scarecroe 01:29, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
That's a good distinction, Scarecroe...the thing may be notable, but that notability does not seem to be in relation to the page here. This page isn't about everything in relation to everything that relates to Kermit, but only about things directly related to Kermit. If SadKermit (or any other parody) is itself notable, then create a page for it ("notability of a topic" being the threshold for a page to exist). DMacks 02:17, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I have no objection to moving it to it's own page, though it should be wikilinked from here in some fashion. exolon 02:40, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Works for me. It might be notable, and if so, its existance would seem relevant here. Not much more than "it exists" is relevant here, so a wikilink would be the way to go. DMacks 04:01, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Ditto. —scarecroe 16:45, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Southhampton commencement speech

I put back the bit about Kermit's commencement speech at Southhampton not being a huge hit with the students. My source: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/FROG+AFICIONADOS+LEAP+TO+RESCUE+OF+VANISHING+CROAKERS-a083949593 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ruggles (talkcontribs).

"A student doesn't like his commencement speaker" doesn't seem encyclopediacly (?) relevant here..."people have opinions" isn't notable. His concern has little to do with Kermit per se. "I wanted to hear a female rock star, not a male president" isn't an indictment of George Bush, or of males or presidents in general. Seems like the comment that's getting persistently added here is more of a local issue related to the college, not general WP interest about Kermit. DMacks 16:51, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Sad Kermit

As per discussion above, this information now resides at Sad Kermit. Any additional information about this parody should be added to this article instead. 19:38, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Biography

That section needs to be rewritten as it is "in universe". However there is some useful stuff in there, so it's best not to cut it out entirely. DJ Clayworth (talk) 14:34, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

I tried to do that, but there's still a whole load of unsorted information in the big section which needs to be cleaned and tidied. DJ Clayworth (talk) 02:34, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

I need to know who his mom is? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.11.100.132 (talk) 20:33, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Kermit's mom is here. —scarecroe (talk) 20:44, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

guest appearances

Shouldn't the "guest appearances" go the way of parodies. we don't mention when living celebrites go on every single talk show, there is no reason for a puppet. The whole point of guest appearances is that they are generally not notable. I removed a few for now.Yobmod (talk) 10:10, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, i cut about half, and combined the rest thematically into paragraphs (appearances on talk shows, other apearances, adverts). removed the "list" tag, but they stil need sources (to the primary sources, if anyone has them).Yobmod (talk) 10:39, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Reassessment of article

I see that there has been a recent reassessment of the article and I think that it needs a few more improvements to reach this level. As such, I have reassessed it to Start class until the following can be addressed.

  1. The lead needs to be expanded to better summarize the contents of the article. See WP:LEAD for guidelines.
  2. For the non-free images, fair use rationales specifying the article name needs to be added. (For example Image:Tv sam and friends.jpg acknowledges that fair use can be explained for the article on Jim Henson but not Kermit the Frog.)
  3. There are various grammar mistakes I quickly spotted throughout the article, so a copyedit would be beneficial in addressing this point. If you wish, I'll have time to perform this this weekend.
  4. There are several statements throughout the article that need further sourcing, especially for statistical figures.

The article is broad in coverage, which meets the B-class criteria in this respect. Of course there is always room for expansion, so if possible, determine if there are other areas that are of importance to coverage of the topic. It may also be beneficial to see if there are any other related WikiProjects that can have their banners be added to this page as well as assist in improving the article further. At this time the article should remain at start class, and if a more comprehensive review is requested (and/or if you want me to help with a copyedit), please let me know on my talk page and I'll be happy to help out this weekend. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 23:42, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Kermit Love

Did Henson name Kermit after Kermit Love perchance? 4.242.174.183 (talk) 08:41, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

The Love article notes Henson didn't know him until years after the muppet was created. It's possible Henson knew of him, but I don't know of any published source making that connection. DMacks (talk) 09:05, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Character Retired

When Jim Henson died, there was an announcement that Kermit the Frog would be retired, since the two were essentially each other. I have never heard why this decision was reversed or whose decision it was. I would like to see that added to the article if someone knows. Victor Engel (talk) 22:28, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

There was never any such announcement. Never. Within a week of Henson's death, the Muppeteers were discussing who would take over. Not out of lack of respect, but just knowing that the show must go on. Even the rumors of Rowlf's retirement were unfounded; it just took a long time to find someone to perform him. Powers T 15:12, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Here is an IMDB reference mentioning his retirement from Sesame Street for several years.Sesame Street article on IMDB. Victor Engel (talk) 20:38, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, I have no idea how accurate those accounts on IMDb are. Even if they're true, they don't speak to why Kermit was not used for those years. Powers T 00:23, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Commercial

Does anyone know of the commercial where Kermit tells kids how to save energy, for example by turning of the light when leaving the room? Emptymountains (talk) 19:18, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

I suggest asking on Muppet Wiki. Powers T 00:07, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Kermit the Frog and Jim Henson

There is more information about Kermit the Frog on Jim Henson page. Among other things there is mention that Kermit was based on Jim Henson only a bit more bolder than the creator. A long forgotten show

There was some kind of TV movie, later made into a record in the very early 80s. All I remember was something about three cranky old men and a group of muppets had to deal with them. I think Kermit might have been in the show, but I can't recall. Does anyone remember the name of the work? -OberRanks (talk) 13:19, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

You might have better luck asking the experts over at Muppet Wiki. Powers T 15:17, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! It was actually "The Muppet Musicians of Bremen". Watched it on Youtube two days ago! -OberRanks (talk) 17:16, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Creation of Kermit

Kermit was created from a turquoise woman-size coat that Henson's mother had thrown into a waste bin. According to the French Wikipedia, Kermit was created from a coat that a friend of Henson's mother had thrown into the waste bin (Le prototype de Kermit fut créé à partir d'un manteau vert pour femme qu'une amie de la mère d'Henson avait jeté à la poubelle). So, which version is correct? --Mirrordor 16:56, 18 May 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirrordor (talkcontribs)

Henson had always said it was his mom's coat. Powers T 19:15, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
