edit

I noticed two formatting issues in this article. One is lack of language tagging of most of the Khmer words in the article. The other is a broken list in the section Traditional games (ល្បែង⁣ប្រជាប្រិយ): It contains what looks like a bulletted list with paragraphs between the elements. Either turn the bulletted lines into headings or turn all but the first paragraph of it into a definition list. For consistency with the The three days of the new year section, I lean slightly more towards the heading approach, but a definition list would work too.

I'm showing the definition list approach here because the heading approach would create subsections on this talk page. It can be turned into the heading approach by find-replacing a newline and a semicolon with a newline and three equal signs and then find-replacing a newline and a colon with three equal signs and a newline.

Chol Chhoung (ចោល⁣ឈូង)
A game played especially on the first nightfall of the Khmer New Year by two groups of boys and girls. Ten or 20 people comprise each group, standing in two rows opposite each other. One group throws the chhoung to the other group. When it is caught, it will be rapidly thrown back to the first group. If someone is hit by the chhoung, the whole group must dance to get the chhoung back while the other group sings to the dance.
Chab Kon Kleng (ចាប់⁣កូនខ្លែង)
A game played by imitating a hen as she protects her chicks from a crow. Adults typically play this game on the night of the first New Year's Day. Participants usually appoint a strong player to play the hen who protects "her" chicks, while another person is picked to be the "crow". While both sides sing a song of bargaining, the crow tries to catch as many chicks as possible as they hide behind the hen.
Bos Angkunh (បោះអង្គុញ⁣)
The simple style consists of just throwing the Ongkunhs to hit the target Ongkunhs. The extended style adds five more stages in addition to the throwing stage. Both styles end with a penalty called Jours-activity that the winning team members get to perform on the losing team members. The Jours-activity is performed by using the Onkunghs the hit the knees of the losing team.
Leak Kanseng (លាក់⁣កន្សែង)
A game played by a group of children sitting in a circle. Someone holding a kanseng (Cambodian towel) that is twisted into a round shape walks around the circle while singing a song. The person walking secretly tries to place the kanseng behind one of the children. If that chosen child realizes what is happening, he or she must pick up the kanseng and beat the person sitting next to him or her.
Bay Khom(បាយខុម)
A game played by two children in rural or urban areas during their leisure time. Ten holes are dug in the shape of an oval into a board in the ground. The game is played with 42 small beads, stones or fruit seeds. Before starting the game, five beads are put into each of the two holes located at the tip of the board. Four beads are placed in each of the remaining eight holes. The first player takes all the beads from any hole and drops them one by one in the other holes. He or she must repeat this process until they have dropped the last bead into a hole that lies besides any empty one. Then they must take all the beads in the hole that follows the empty one. At this point, the second player may have his turn. The game ends when all the holes are empty. The player with the greatest number of beads wins the game. It is possibly similar to congkak.

Language tagging is a bit harder. Basically you need to wrap {{lang|km|...}} around everything in Khmer that isn't already tagged with either lang or lang-km. That's done in the proposed version of the traditional games section above. And here's a fix for the other headings:

  • Maha Sangkran (មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត)
  • Virak Vanabat (វិរ:វ័នបត)
  • Vearak Loeng Sak (វារៈឡើងស័ក)
  • Traditional games (ល្បែង⁣ប្រជាប្រិយ)
  • Angkor Sangkran (អង្គរសង្ក្រាន្ត)

Here are some other places to tag. You probably want to copy the wikicode used here so that italics get applied to the text written in the Latin alphabet but not those in the Khmer script. Also note that some words are in Sanskrit, so those have the language code set to "sa".

  • In the lead section
    • Choul Chnam Thmey
  • In the infobox
    • បុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំថ្មី
    • Choul Chnam Thmey
  • In subsections of The three days of the new year. There's one of these in each subsection:
    • Maha Sangkran
    • Maha Sankranti
    • Virak Vanabat (វិរ:វ័នបត)
    • Vearak Loeng Sak (វារៈឡើងស័ក)
  • in the New Year's customs section:
    • Sraung Preah (ស្រង់ព្រះ)
  • in the Angkor Sangran section
    • Angkor Sangkranta

Sorry if this is a lot of stuff to change. I've tried to keep these instructions easy to follow, but they are a bit long. Pretended leer {talk} 12:56, 22 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pretended leer. I'm going to suggest you wait two days until the extended protection lapses and do this all yourself, it's a lot and I don't want to mess it up. I have asked the protecting admin if they would reduce the protection level to semi-protection which would allow you to make the edit yourself before then. Fish+Karate 13:34, 22 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Fish and karate. I'm marking the request as solved and I'll return in two days to make the edit then. – Pretended leer {talk} 13:57, 22 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Pretended leer: I've ended the protection early, so you should be able to edit now. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 06:07, 23 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @Callanecc:! I've made the edit now. I also removed the invisible padlock while I was at it. – Pretended leer {talk} 17:42, 23 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've undone that edit, but I don't see enough of a problem to justify page protection at this time. I'll keep an eye on the page, however. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:33, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Reply to RoySmith user This page is controversial and has a history of any negative changes contrary to the official name of the Khmer New Year Khmerloy9 (talk) 18:40, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Khmerloy9, Yes, I'm aware of the history. If you believe we need a distinct Khmer New Year page (as opposed to the current redirect), please start a discussion here and see if you can generate consensus for either a rename or a spinout. Thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:44, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I have enough documents to rewrite my country's New Year article, but I need more time and I would like to delete this page in the future. Khmerloy9 (talk) 18:56, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Khmerloy9, The best thing would be for you to write your article as a draft, i.e. Draft:Khmer New Year. Once you think it's ready, submit it for review. It's a lot easier for people to evaluate something once it's in draft form. If it passes review, it can get moved into mainspace at that time. If not, at least you'll get feedback on what needs to be improved. -- RoySmith (talk) 22:12, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
RoySmith, just a heads up that Khmerloy9 is a sock of Phnom Penh Skyline, who has a long history of POV pushing on this topic. Onel5969 TT me 00:34, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Onel5969, Yeah, I saw that, but thanks for the ping. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:49, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
There might also be no need to delete this article and doing so might actually bad idea because it basically would remove any record of the contributions made to it by others over the years. We try to improve Wikipedia articles per WP:PRESERVE whenever possible and only resort to deletion only when there's pretty much no way to fix an article. A separate article related to the Khmer New Year may be warranted, but that doesn't mean that this article needs to be deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:49, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Brother85, please go to WP:RFPP if you are wanting to adjust the level of protection for this article. AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 15:32, 18 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello all editors & administrators. I am here to request the article to be unlocked since there are many important sections to be expanded or included with some useful information. For instance, in this article, the history section and the Goddess of new year section are missing. Beside these, the legend of the origin of the Cambodian New Year is not included in the article as well. Please reconsider this, so the article can be improved. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joe165 (talkcontribs) 02:19, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Thankful Joe165 for your understanding
Brother85, Joe165, no legend stuff. That reeks of Phnom Penh Skyline LTA. AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 19:58, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
