Massacre?

edit

I correct the category from just plain Category:Massacres to the more specific Category:Massacres by Native Americans. I wonder if this should really be called a massacre since they killed enemy combatants which seems to fall outside of the Webster's definition:

the act or an instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty [1]

Or is this is case of it originally being referred to as a "massacre" by their enemies of the time (propoganda), in which case the massacre should be put in inverted commas?

There's no way it wouldn't be a massacre unless you applied double standards. Every single member of the party was killed. Think about that for a minute. There's not a chance each of those guys was killed with a headshot while firing gallantly at his attackers. Several wounded must have been put to death after the Indians took control of the position.71.129.81.136 14:50, 20 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

If a party of a dozen Indians had been killed and mutilated by whites, would you call it a massacre?Joescallan 19:31, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely. Take a look at the Wiki article on the Sand Creek Massacre (which, btw, had some survivors). Theres numerous examples from both sides - as with most wars... Engr105th (talk) 02:35, 27 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Again, if we take the Webster's definition, this fight, which was a running battle over at least a mile, lacks both the requirements of "helpless" and "unresisting". It was a lopsided victory for Cheyenne and Lakota warriors over a 7th cav. detachment. Calling it a massacre was propaganda. It's more than time to correct that and put the term masscare in quotation marks and add a proper battlebox to the article, designating it a "Cheyenne/Lakota victory".
