"Klamath Knot" - not in common usage

edit

This term was used/linked in another article (Klamath-Siskiyou forests ecoregion) as if it were a topographic term; as a regular contributor/editor with WP:Mountains I had to have a look...but this is a promo for a book, and trying to advance the book's concept/title as if it were already in common usage. Clearly, to me, this page and related "pepperings" in other articles are meant to establish the term, and also promote interest in the book....I haven't read it closely enough yet but I venture that WP:COI is probably also present.Skookum1 (talk) 21:02, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Klamath Knot" is real, not just a book promo

edit

The book "The Klamath Knot" came out in 1983, the presence of a lot of references online is due to the popularity of the book, not to any "promo". The term "Klamath Knot" is not a topographic term such as "mountain", it is a specific geological feature in a specific place, like "Mt McKinley". So "The Klamath Knot" is in common usage, but only among those studying the geology of the area around the Klamath Mountains in Northern California/Southern Oregon. It is true that google mostly finds references to the book, the book is popular and has stayed in print for a very long time. People talk about the book a whole lot more than the geological area referred to in the title. To thin out the herd of google hits, it can help to toss in a few geological terms along side of "Klamath Knot", then one can find references to the geological area instead of the book.

Such as at a California Academy of Sciences page on the geological area: (Search down for Klamath Knot).

Or here at The Native Plant Society of Oregon:

Or here at Montana State University (the link was long, type "Klamath Knot" into the search box to find lectures on the Klamath Knot, not the book, the geological area):

Remove COI tag

edit

This article has come full circle from when I started it as a description of the The Klamath Knot. It is now a page of the works of David Rains Wallace with a new option to start pages about the books he wrote. There is (and never was) any conflict of interest so I will remove the tag and consider starting a The Klamath Knot page once again...Michael E.
