Mount Frere Municipality Urgue for Change

edit

I would like to have contacts for Mount Frere Municipality. I believe that we have to help in the development of our town as the community. Most people have left the Province and are staying in the Provinces that have the means to support in the primary needs. This is now the time for people to give back to this small town: the knowledge and the skill has to be applied which people have acquired from working in other Provinces.

Where do we reach to the Mount Frere Municipality? Can someone help.

thank you. 13:36, 18 August 2009 (UTC)~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.213.126.5 (talk)

The result of the move request was: Moved as requested Evidence cited by nom clearly supports move per WP:COMMONNAME Additionally, anyone searching for KwaBhaca will certainly be redirected to the correct article. KwaBhacaMount FrereNgrams strongly suggests that "Mount Frere" remains the common name for this location, with KwaBhaca showing minimal use as "Kwabhaca", as does Google Scholar, which shows dozens of uses of "Mount Frere" in the past year, while it shows no relevant uses of "KwaBhaca". Recent news results are inconclusive. BilledMammal (talk) 06:09, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

There is no reason to move this page. I will open a move review if this happens because it's easy to see there is no reason for this move. Desertambition (talk) 00:29, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: not moved to the proposed title at this time, per the discussion below. It is possible that data (rather than anecdotal evidence) may support the application of WP:NAMECHANGES in the future, but I suggest initiating that kind of discussion before starting a new move request. • Oppose and speedy close. We had a move request on this three months ago, where systematic evidence was presented. It is too early to reopen this, particularly with evidence that only demonstrates that the official name is in use, rather than evidence that demonstrates that the official name is the common name. BilledMammal (talk) 22:36, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
There is WP:NOTIMELIMIT to changes like this and three months is plenty of time. Reliable sources continue to use the new name. The prior move request also had little discussion. If you have an argument based on existing WP:GUIDELINES then by all means provide it. Consistent coverage by reliable sources demonstrates WP:COMMONNAME. Desertambition (talk) 23:15, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I stand by my argument presented three months ago, which still applies. BilledMammal (talk) 23:18, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Citing ngrams and google search results are highly misleading when not properly contextualized. Did you make sure the results were not referring to organizations or businesses that use "Mount Frere" or events that occurred prior to the name change? Specific examples of consistent recent coverage by reliable sources also tend to be much more persuasive arguments and direct evidence of WP:COMMONNAME. Desertambition (talk) 23:22, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
You find specific examples more persuasive, but all they demonstrate is that the name is in use, and are not useful for determining whether it is the commonname. However, if specific examples would be helpful in resolving this, I can easily provide them - if I was to provide ten examples of recent reliable sources referring to the modern town as "Mount Frere", would you withdraw your request? BilledMammal (talk) 23:28, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I don't think this is a productive conversation. If you would like to provide alternative evidence you are free to do so.
    WP:COMMONNAME says:
"Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources) as such names will usually best fit the five criteria listed above."
The sources cited above are from independent, reliable, English-language sources. Desertambition (talk) 23:33, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
They are from independent English-language sources, but they don't determine prevalence. I'm also not convinced they are reliable; if the woman in question was 119 in November last year, she would have been the oldest living person, a title that at the time was held by a 118 year old Japanese woman.
I won't bother to provide the specific examples as your response makes me think you won't find them persuasive - if anyone else would like them then please ping me. BilledMammal (talk) 00:11, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose and speedy close. There is no indication that anything has changed in such a short amount of time from the previous RM discussion. Rreagan007 (talk) 00:15, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Support Since the name was officially changed, reliable sources (mostly newspaper articles) are using it - usually as KwaBhaca (formerly Mount Frere) but sometimes just KwaBhaca [1], [2], [3] - I think the article title should reflect the current usage. (I tried to check road signs as well but Google Street View hasn't been updated since 2014.) SportingFlyer T·C 08:46, 12 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per WP:MPN - recent sources since the change seem to prefer use of the new name. Given that policy suggests we should give more weight to sources after the name change, this seems like a reasonable move. Turnagra (talk) 03:43, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
    • Did you take a look at the evidence presented above? Google news has a slight preference for Mount Frere, with 82 results in the past year, compared to 78 for KwaBhaca, while Google Scholar has an overwhelming preference for Mount Frere, with 58 results since 2018 compared to 3 for KwaBhaca, and ngrams shows four times the use of Mount Frere as it does for KwaBhaca. Recent sources since the change don't prefer the new name, they prefer the old name. BilledMammal (talk) 03:54, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Per WP:NAMECHANGES: "Sometimes the subject of an article will undergo a change of name. When this occurs, we give extra weight to independent, reliable English-language sources ("reliable sources") written after the name change. If the reliable sources written after the change is announced routinely use the new name, Wikipedia should follow suit and change relevant titles to match."
Multiple examples from reliable sources published after the name change satisfies Wikipedia policy. Inexact google search/google scholar/ngrams results do not. You have to manually sort through the sources and provide a detailed summary in order for it to be compelling evidence that satisfies existing WP:GUIDELINES. Desertambition (talk) 03:58, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
See WP:RSPM, which states Make your point as best you can; use evidence (such as Google Ngrams and pageview statistics). Ngrams is compelling evidence and along with Google Scholar and Google News search results is far more compelling than cherrypicked examples, which tell us nothing about whether the name has become predominant in common global usage as required by WP:MPN. I would also point towards Google Trends, which tells us what people actually call the location - and they overwhelming call it Mount Frere.
However, to satisfy you, I have reviewed the first page of Google Scholar results; eight of the ten results are independent, reliable English-language sources written after the name change, in reference to events after the name change. From the first page alone, this means we already have eight result to the three for KwaBhaca (and I note that two of those KwaBhaca results would need to be excluded under the same criteria; one of the results prefers Mount Frere, writing Mt Frere (KwaBhaca), and another refers to events in 2000). Note also that these results are only for "Mount Frere"; "Mt Frere", which appears to have some use per my review of the KwaBhaca Google Scholar results and should be grouped with "Mount Frere", has not been considered and will make the result in favour of "Mount Frere" even stronger. BilledMammal (talk) 04:14, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
It would be somewhat asinine to rely on Google Scholar to tell us the name of a city when it has a different official name in use. That's why I was concerned about the road signs, and I found an article here showing the road signs would be switched over in 2018/19, which wasn't soon enough for some residents: [4] Therefore, by opposing, you're suggesting a result where we don't keep a town's official gazetted name, on official signs, and now used as much or more than the town's old name, because some academics haven't updated their usage yet. There are even a couple books which pre-dated the official name change suggesting KwaBhaca was the locally used name in spite of the official title. SportingFlyer T·C 13:22, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Road signs aren't useful in determining the WP:COMMONNAME of the place, as they are required to use the official name. What is useful is determining which name independent sources - including academic sources - prefer to use, and that is still Mount Frere. BilledMammal (talk) 06:12, 22 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. Per the evidence described by BilledMammal above (particularly GNews, Scholar, and Ngrams), "Mount Frere" seems to be the common name in secondary sources, even in the years after the official name was changed. Colin M (talk) 19:42, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. Evidence does not show that "KwaBhaca" has replaced "Mount Frere" in common usage.
In terms of Google News searches, neither name is predominant:
    "Mount Frere" 243
    "KwaBhaca" 222
In terms of Google searches, "Mount Frere" predominant:
    "Mount Frere" 262,000
    "KwaBhaca" 17,100
