Getting started
editThere is an error in the introduction to this page: Picacho Peak is not even remotely near Las Cruces, as is stated in the beginning of this page! I am unable to edit the page, so I thought I'd make the error known here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.123.58.38 (talk) 21:51, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Okay folks, Mesilla Valley article is created! Please contribute to it as yo see fit, I only made a stub.
Surely someone has a picture of the city somewhere? Maybe a local photographer could go up "A Mountain" (Tortuguas peak) and snap a nice picture of the city... This article needs a picture of the city!!!
Perhaps the "view from space" image would be better suited in the Geography section? Neomexicanus_lc 07:08, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Suggestion: some of the content in the main heading should be allocted to subsections. I recommend looking at the Tucson, AZ article for reference...it's pretty sharp. Also, if anyone agrees with my desire to change the location map, as a GIS geek, I'm more than willing to create a better location map. Neomexicanus_lc 07:32, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Space Port
editI just read in Der Spiegel (German News with English site) that Las Cruces N.M. is to be the site of a new International Space port built by Richard Branson and some other investors. To start construction in 2008. Thought I would bring this up. Some one might want to research and add it to the cities web site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dkriegls (talk • contribs) 01:20, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
The Spaceport isn't actually going to be based in Las Cruces. It's not even going to be located in Doña Ana County but rather some where in Sierra County. A sign for it can be seen from the I-25. All2humanuk (talk) 05:18, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- The spaceport is described in Spaceport America. Las Cruces is the nearest large city, although still 45 miles away from the spaceport, so a reference in the present article might be appropriate. --Uncia (talk) 15:54, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
disambig
editI changed the "Las Cruces" page to a disambig page, and got rid of the disambig note at the top of this. There are I'm sure other Las Cruces's around the world and others will no doubt add to that disambig page. No reason to have it all redirect here. Fredwerner 02:28, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:NMSU.jpg
editImage:NMSU.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. coas books
editwould a page on Coas Books be appropriate and relevant to L.C. History? 70.56.139.28 (talk) 00:25, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- It's probably not worth a whole page, but I added a paragraph on it under Arts and Culture. --Uncia (talk) 22:46, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Revised population figures for Las Cruces
editI'm having some discussion with User:Martinez07 on his and my talk pages about some revised population figures for Las Cruces city and metro area that he posted as 2008 figures in this article. He says they come from a study done this year by Las Cruces city government, but he did not provide a citation (either to me or in the article). I am unenthusiastic about accepting such figures, even with a citation, because the WikiProject Cities guidelines WP:USCITY are to use only US Census Bureau data. Any thoughts? --Uncia (talk) 10:01, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- Despite some prodding, User:Martinez07 has not provided any sources for his 2008 estimates, so I have reverted back to the 2006 estimates from the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program. Anyone with more recent sourced population figures is welcome to provide them! --Uncia (talk) 11:49, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Martinez07 has been blocked indefinitely as a sock puppet, so we probably won't be hearing any justification for his 2008 figures. --Uncia (talk) 01:12, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Restructuring this article per WP:USCITY
editI'm starting to restructure this article per the WikiProject Cities/Guideline in WP:USCITY. Any help is appreciated! The structure is already fairly close; needed changes include:
- Most recommended sections exist but are out of order
- There are a few extra sections such as Downtown and Information Sources; the info here needs to be redistributed
- There are a few missing sections such as Arts and Culture, Sports, Utilities. Filling these in is what takes most of the work
- Most of Transportation and Media are merely lists and need some narrative. This also takes a lot of work.
Thanks. --Uncia (talk) 14:48, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- OK, we now have the article arranged according to the skeleton at WP:USCITY. And "skeleton" is the right word, becae we now see that there are a lot of things missing. There's nothing for Sports, Parks and recreation, and Utilities (under Transportation). There's not much for Economy, Government, and Healthcare (under Infrastructure). Some of the writing is not very clear. And the article is mostly lacking in sources; there are 8 sources (footnotes) for a 33K article, and half of those sources are for population figures and half are for libraries, so most of the topics covered here have no sources at all. I'll continue to work on plumping up the article. Other editors are welcome to help! --Uncia (talk) 00:16, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- I have plumped up the article a good bit, and it is probably adequately sourced now. On the other hand, much needed information is still absent. Some of the WP:USCITY sections are almost empty, for example Economy, Annual Cultural Events, Sports, Parks and recreation, Government. In addition the Infrastructure section consists mostly of lists with no narrative. --Uncia (talk) 20:37, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Proposed merger from Whole Enchilada Fiesta
editWhole Enchilada Fiesta, an article about an annual event in Las Cruces, is currently a stub with no references and no pages pointing to it other than this one. I propose merging it into the existing discussion in this article at Las_Cruces,_New_Mexico#Annual_cultural_events, condensing down to the most useful information, and providing adequate references. Comments? --Uncia (talk) 19:53, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- There being no objections, I have merged the pages. --Uncia (talk) 03:54, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
If you want reference to the fiesta, why don't you post a link to the official web page. www.enchiladafiesta.com Also I have taken out the portion of the whole ensalada. The fiesta hasn't done this in quite some time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.161.40.1 (talk) 15:53, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Symphony
editShouldn't the Symphony be mentioned? It has received national attention and been broadcast nationally on Performance Today ("Remembering Icarus" piece). I'll leave NM residents or someone who knows more than me to do the honors. Softlavender (talk) 02:07, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have added a paragraph about Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra under Arts and Culture. Thanks for pointing this out! --Uncia (talk) 17:34, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
- Great job. I tweaked things a bit (not your wording) for clarity. Softlavender (talk)
Why Clarification?
editThe statement that Las Cruces is the center of an agricultural region bounded by the Rio Grande does not, in my view, require "clarification." Las Cruces is the second-largest city in the state, and the only one of significance in that part of the state. If it is not the "center" of anything in that region, what would be?
Schools
editI have made an edit about the Catholic School in LC to its current name, but I was wondering if I should add a mention of the Catholic HS (St. Mary's)BK2011 (talk) 03:26, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Origin of name?
editIn the article, you have an explanation of where the city name comes from. You have the word "cruce". The singular form of cruces is cruz. There are some Spanish words that use opposite adjectives; cruz is one of them. Another is mano (hand); that is la mano.
I live in Las Cruces and the accepted story is,
"How We Got Our Name
There are multiple theories as to how Las Cruces got its name. One theory suggests that sometime during the 18th Century, a bishop, a priest, a Mexican Army colonel, a captain, four trappers and four choir boys were attacked near the Rio Grande and only one - a boy - survived. Crosses were erected in their honor, and the name, El Pueblo del Jardin de Las Cruces, (the City of the Garden of Crosses,) evolved.
Other stories say multiple crosses were erected in the area to mark the grave sites of the many victims of Apache raids. Still another story is that a group of 40 travelers from Taos, NM were killed just as they reached Las Cruces. But some people feel that the name is simply the Spanish translation for "crossing" or "crossroads."
(taken from The Las Cruces Convention & Visitor Bureau website http://www.lascrucescvb.org/html/las_cruces__new_mexico_history.html)
The logos used around here usually only have 3 crosses. Also, Las Cruces is at the south end of the Jornada del Muerte and a lot of people died trying to get here from Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

List of Notable Residents
editI was noticing that the list of Notable residents of Las Cruces is getting rather large. Maybe we should create a list for all of them and just pick maybe one artist, scientist, athlete, etc. and maybe creating a specific list for graduates of NMSU since that is what mostly is taken up by the section? BK2011 (talk) 05:11, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- I am the one that added most of the names. I agree. Let's first move the NMSU-Only connections to the NMSU site. And make note in this section that it does not include NMSU-Only people. That should pare the list down. If it's still substantial, making a stand-alone list makes sense. Jcbalding (talk) 11:30, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Trivial advert mention
editI've again reverted the trivial mention of a non-notable nickname given to the city by a touring podcast program (example of edit here). The material is being added by multiple one-time use IPs and an SPA account. This is the same material that was added in July 2010 (see contributions by 68.35.58.106 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)). The mention is, at best, an advert for the podcast program, and at worse it is vandalism regarding a trivial, non-notable term, and makes claims not sourced to a reliable source. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 02:37, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
Notable Residents
editI noticed that This section is fairly long, so I was wondering if I should create an Article on famous residents of Las Cruces, NM. I think that it is not worth putting all 35 people on the article (but I may be wrong), but I definitly think that we should get rid of everyone whose only connection to the city is that they went to the NMSU for college (as Such Randy Brown would be removed — Preceding unsigned comment added by BK2011 (talk • contribs) 02:42, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
American Southwest Theatre Company and ASNMSU Center for the Arts
editI attempted to include an entry under venues for ASNMSU Center for the Arts. It was recommended it be stricken and added to the New Mexico State University page instead. Although the building itself is located on the NMSU campus, it hosts events other than NMSU events. In fact, it is also a rental house and has hosted performances and productions from New York, etc. Additionally, the Las Cruces Symphony is listed as a venue (even though it is technically a company as its venue is the NMSU Music Building) and it is located on the NMSU campus as well. This would seem to be parallel in reasoning to include the ASNMSU Center for the Arts. American Southwest Theatre Company is a prominent company in Las Cruces, having presented world premieres of plays such as Mark Medoff's Tony-winning Children of Lesser God. For these reasons, I feel it is more appropriate to designate it a Las Cruces venue, and not an NMSU venue. Should others feel differently, I'd recommend moving the Las Cruces Symphony to the NMSU page as well. Tomsmith69 (talk) 16:02, 7 May 2015 (UTC)tomsmith69
The drive-in theater was invented in 1914 in Las Cruces, New Mexico
editI'm wondering why this information isn't included in the article but it's included in Drive-in theater. This is a pretty big piece of American history not to mention it. - Gorba (talk) 00:04, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- Pretty wild claims there, some of which I removed since the quotes from the sources didn't support them. Needs more looking into. Dicklyon (talk) 22:18, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
