Spade vs. acorn
editThe idea that the shield represents a miner's spade is very appropriate; however, the two RSs only state that it's in that shape but don't actually prove that that's what was intended. Conversely, the author of the April 1937 California Highways and Public Works article that I just added as a source directly identifies it as acorn-shaped, and while that may be the opinion of the author, since he worked for the Division of Highways, it follows that that's probably a direct official identification and thus holds more weight. Incidentally, the August 1934 CHPW article that introduced the marker, cited at History of California's state highway system § 1920 to 1958, never describes the marker shape in the text, it only shows an illustration. - Per Page 11 of this CHPW article [1] the current version of CA's highway shield was released in 1964. Therefore the 1934 CHPW article is surely referring to the old black and white design, not the current design, and would be inappropriate to use that as a source to describe the current design. - The symbol is the same, they're just different stylizations. The 1964 source backs this up. Mapsax (talk) 00:13, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
