Renaming Proposal

edit

I have initiated a discussion with @Hansmuller: who previously renamed the related Hague Academy of International Law article to The Hague Academy of International Law on the question of whether this article should be similarly-renamed. Any thoughts from my fellow Wikipedians on this question would be most appreciated.--TommyBoy (talk) 23:16, 7 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

We should ask the Academy itself what they want now, it's their institute and name. Years ago, i had some contact with them, and they agreed then with the name change of the article. but i don't know what they want today. Cheers, Hansmuller (talk) 12:14, 8 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@TommyBoy The problem is caused by
  1. the peculiar and unusual city name The Hague with the article "The". Yes, once there was a local hedgerow (Dutch: haag, hague), The hedgerow. But then there also was (and is) a dam in the Amstel river, and nevertheless we don't use as a city name "The Amsterdam". It appears we have to live with "The Hague". (Fun: this reminds us of the discussion about "Facebook" and the original "The Facebook". But in the case of The Hague history has decided otherwise ;-)
  2. The domain name on the internet of "the The" Hague Academy of International Law is "hagueacademy.nl", a simple abbreviation, not meant to change their name, but suggesting erroneously that their name is "Hague Academy of International Law".
So i think we are entitled to add "The" everywhere where it is missing, but if you are doubful, just ask the Academy, easy! (No fuss needed.) Good luck, Hansmuller (talk) 10:15, 9 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
The opinion of the Academy is of little relevance. What matters is usage in sources. bd2412 T 12:24, 9 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
I agree with @BD2412:, the question of whether this article and its related categories (Category:The Hague Academy of International Law and Category:The Hague Academy of International Law people should be renamed is subject to applicable Wikipedia policies and guidelines, not merely the opinion of the Academy.--TommyBoy (talk) 05:00, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
