Merger proposal
editBecause both List of NHS Trusts and List of Primary Care Trusts in England are out of date by several years, I propose to merge the latter into the former, identifying the trust and the type of trust (Mental Health, Hospital, Care, Primary Care). I would suggest that list be organised by NHS Strategic Health Authority region rather than alphabetically as the page can easily be searched and I think that this might be a more useful way to organise it. Millstream3 (talk) 21:14, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
This doesn't really make sense as these trusts are fundamentally different types of organisations (despite all containing the name "trust"). For example, PCTs are payor organisations (buyers of healthcare) whereas hospital trusts are providers of healthcare. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.31.195.90 (talk) 14:09, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I agree that we need to ensure that trusts are clearly identified by type and role, however they should be merged to avoid duplication of data as it leads to out of date information.
Propose list broken down by SHA, and then trusts within that SHA clearly identified by type of trust and whether they are 'Commissioners' or 'Providers'. That would fit in line with the recent Commissioner / Provider splits. JasonClint (talk) 11:52, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
No approach will be perfect, but I agree with the proposal to merge into one list, identifying clearly what the type of organisation is. Rvarnam (talk) 12:24, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
I think it would be really useful to track the PCT mergers that are in play but this is changing very rapidly under the Health Service reforms so whoever takes responsibility for editing this page will have a real challenge in keeping it up to date Bishoplatimer (talk) 17:06, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm the merge backlog guy. I know nearly nothing about the British health care system. There's been three years to do this and it hasn't happened. I deleting the merge tag. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 02:41, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I've removed the Primary Care Trusts from the list, as they have been abolished. There is a separate list of PCTs for those who are interested. I've updated the names and inserted all the Foundation Trusts. I am going to try to match the names of Trusts to the existing wikipedia entries.Rathfelder (talk) 00:12, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Given the rate of organisational change in the English NHS a new list every couple of years might be the best way of dealing with the problem of updating.Rathfelder (talk) 00:10, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
NB there is no point asking people to add Trusts beginning with V. There aren't any.Rathfelder (talk) 00:10, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
Current list
editI believe the current list is avaliable on the NHS website. I intend to transfer it here however my paceis likely to be slow. I have completed alphabets a, b and c. Pleas feel free to take it further — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nehete (talk • contribs) 20:40, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Rename page
editI think the main usefulness of this list is the historical information, which is not captured by the automatic lists that Wikipedia generates. Would it be helpful to rename it to Historical list of NHS trusts to better reflect this and to avoid confusion? Entries could be better formatted to show multiple changes - for example, tabulated. Millstream3 (talk) 08:55, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
Strongly disagree. Its a live list. A historical list would have to exclude all those which are still going. It is a delusion to think that wikipedia automatically generates lists. Rathfelder (talk) 09:17, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
Apologies, I used an incorrect WP term. The purpose would be to distinguish this page from the categories NHS Foundation Trusts and NHS trusts. This page has valuable historical information - it is certainly not a live list. If it were, we would need to delete the defunct organisations. Millstream3 (talk) 11:10, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
Would it be a good idea to add a list at the end of the current page showing the current NHS trusts? Redhill54 (talk) 16:15, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Are you going to undertake to keep it up to date? What would it tell us that Category:NHS trusts doesnt tell us? Rathfelder (talk) 17:15, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

List of NHS trusts → List of NHS England trusts – Following some discussion over at NHS Nightingale Hospitals I feel this article too would benefit from more WP:Precision. Trusts exist outside of the English NHS and it is important that readers of this article do not consider it a definitive list for the "NHS" as a whole, which most would consider to include all of the constituent NHS bodies in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Llemiles (talk) 13:38, 19 April 2020 (UTC) —Relisting. buidhe 00:12, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- Clarification post-nom: I'd prefer this article be titled List of NHS England trusts, and then have this name as a disambiguation pointing additionally to HSC Northern Ireland Trusts, NHS Wales trusts and health boards, and NHS Scotland health boardsLlemiles (talk) 14:58, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
- Agree in principle, although the four countries do use different terminology: NHS trusts (England), health and social care trusts (NI), health boards (Wales) and NHS boards (Scotland). The name of the article is technically correct as it is - and there will not be articles called, e.g. NHS Scotland Trusts. Therefore a common approach to the introductory text in the four lists (if they all exist) and cross-references between the lists would also be helpful. Millstream3 (talk) 14:35, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback. Just to add some further thoughts after some reading. My concern is that there are HSC NI trusts which many in Northern Ireland would view as being part of the NHS (even if labelled HSC), Wales has three NHS trusts (not in the regional sense as in England but the term exists), and Scotland used the term trusts up until 2004. If this article were to truly cover all NHS trusts we would have to either clarify or cover:
- Velindre NHS Trust
- Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust
- Public Health Wales
- Belfast HSC Trust
- South Eastern HSC Trust
- Western HSC Trust
- Southern HSC Trust
- Northern HSC Trust Llemiles (talk) 14:58, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
- I dont think this is a good idea. NHS trusts in England are very different animals from these organisations in the rest of the UK and operate in a very different context. The head note is intended to make that clear. In England they are always called NHS trusts. The term "NHS England trust" is not used and would be very unhelpful. NHS England is an organisation in its own right. I dont think there are really enough trusts in Wales or NI to justify separate list articles. If people really want this to include the whole of the UK it would make more sense to add separate section for Wales, NI and Scotland.Rathfelder (talk) 20:21, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose. No need for this move per WP:COMMONNAME. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. Buttons0603 (talk) 21:10, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Repeated reverts
edit@Millstream3: Please explain, in the context of WP:WEASEL and WP:OWN, why you have twice reverted what seems to be a fairly reasonable one-word edit, changing 'unique' to 'multi-service'. The former does not convey much information. All trusts are, in some respects, unique; IoW is a multi-service trust, the context for the multiple services being established earlier in the sentence: " NHS trusts, NHS foundation trusts, acute hospital trusts, ambulance trusts, mental health trusts".
It's stuff like this - repeated silent reverts without even the merest courtesy of an edit summary note - that makes editing WP sometimes so shitty. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:38, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Tagishsimon: Apologies - I think you missed the note I left for you three days ago on your talk page. Millstream3 (talk) 09:20, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Contents list
editThe contents list obscures the existence of the defunct trusts. Is there any way of getting rid of it? Rathfelder (talk) 09:17, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Rathfelder - does my edit just now do the job? Millstream3 (talk) 10:46, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
It still doesnt show that there is a list of Former NHS trusts further down. Rathfelder (talk) 11:25, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, it does - I changed to a TOC template that lists all the headings. Millstream3 (talk) 12:35, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
